Mullaghbawn Clg Description

Set in the heart of South Armagh; Mullaghbawn is a rural area that boasts a proud history in the GAA.

The first Gaelic football team in this area is recorded as the "Geraldines" in 1898.

There were a number of gaps in the continuity in the following years until the formation of the "O'Rahilly's" in 1917. This team remained until 1924 when the club was renamed "St. Mary's". This team ceased to play in 1930.

A short lived team in 1933 was the "Young O'Rahilly's" - an amalgamation with Crossmaglen!

In 1934 the first Cúchulainns was formed. this team contested the Junior and Senior Championship in the same year (1942), winning the Junior. The first Cúchulainns went out of existence in 1947.

The second Cúchulainns were formed in 1950 and significantly changed the colours of the team to today's green and gold; having previously played in red and white.

In 1974 Cúchulainn GFC amalgamated with Forkhill to form "Oliver Plunkett's GFC, " before once more setting out by themselves, as currently recognized today.

The current social club and playing facilities at Cúchulainn Park were constructed in the mid 1970's, during this amalgamation with Forkhill. Mullaghbawn had previously played in O'Hanlon's Field, The Quaker's Field and a field where the Bog Road and Maphoner Road meet.

CHARLIE GRANT TOURNAMENT & JOHN CRAWLEY PERPETUAL CUP
The Group stage of this tournament was held on Saturday 8th September in Mullaghbawn playing fields. A big thank you to our home club, Dromintee, Killeavy, Silverbridge, Cullyhanna, Culloville and Crossmaglen for taking part. The format of the day was held over two group stages, Group A consisting of Mullagbawn, Culloville, Killeavy and Silverbridge, these teams played some excellent displays of football in the morning w...ith Mullaghbawn coming out Group winners. This is the first time in the history of the tournament for our home club to make it to the final.
The afternoon session was played between Crossmaglen, Dromintee and Cullyhanna, these games again give us entertaining football and went down to the wire with Crossmaglen just narrowly proceeded to the final on score difference over Cullyhanna. All the lads from each group made this competition a very entertaining one and goes to show the standard of football in South Armagh is on the up. We also wish Tomas Casey from Cullyhanna a speedy recovery, he sustained a broken arm during the blitz. A big thanks to all referees, linesmen, umpires and stewarts for their help.
The final will be played next Sunday 16th Sept at 6pm in Mullaghbawn. All proceeds from this tournament will be given to Newry Hospice on behalf of the Grant and Crawley families. The final will be followed by presentation of Cups and Certificates and refreshments will be served. We encourage everyone to come out and support the lads.
