Almost 100 NASUWT members attended the NI Equalities Conference on Saturday. It is shocking that most attendees do not believe that they are treated fairly when applying for jobs or promotions. The reasons given included discrimination on protected characteristics and on religious belief which is exempt from Fair Employment legislation (in relation to teachers).
However, most unfairness identified seemed to be from nepotism.
This reflects the experience of our activists in s...chools. In too many schools Principals employ sons, daughters, husbands, wives and in-laws.
The most common tactic for getting a relative into a school is to employ them on a temporary basis, give them the experience to apply and then governors appoint them.
In other schools relatives are employed on a temporary basis and then made permanent after 4 years.
These practices not only discriminate against other teachers but demoralise the existing staff in the school.
If you have been affected by these type of employment practices please get in touch.
