Its panto time again!!!! As Cinderella rolls into the town hall in her pumpkin carriage we’re looking back to 1973 when Charlie Smyth’s panto players also did Cinderella. The poster is on display in the museum. Does anyone have any memories of being in the pantomime?

We are very excited to launch our new costume display case in Newry and Mourne Museum. The case features two post -war dresses belonging to Margaret Reside (1906-1999), a solicitor with the Newry legal firm, Fisher & Fisher. In 1947 Margaret Fisher, as she was then, married Major Gerald Reside, an architect in Newry, and for this occasion, she wore a purple wool crepe dress which is an example of a wartime economy dress. Accompanying this will be a 1960’s day dress probably worn at home and at informal social occasions. As one of the first women solicitors in the United Kingdom, Margaret Reside’s legal career is also be briefly explored as part of this display.

In the Collection of Newry and Mourne Museum are correspondence and memorabilia relating to local chemist shops. Some of this material will feature in a forthcoming exhibition titled Caring for the Community. This exhibition will explore the history of many aspects of healthcare in the area including dispensaries, local doctors and nurses, local hospitals, chemists, ambulance staff, the introduction of the NHS and the impact of the Troubles. This exhibition will open in May 2...020.
Here are a selection of items from Connor’s Chemist, which at one time was the second largest chemist in Ireland. The company was founded by Dr. Patrick Connor, physician, surgeon and druggist in 1826 at the corner of Hill Street and Mill Street. The Medical Hall, a larger premises was later established at 77-79 Hill Street (the current site of Newry Library), extending back to Water Street. It was said to have been one of the largest shops of its kind outside Belfast or Dublin.
The company remained in the Connor family until it was bought in 1967 by Freddy Whitcroft who had been apprenticed to the company in 1953 and subsequently employed as a pharmacist. He began extensive renovations to modernise and expand the size of the shop in Hill Street. He also started discounting heavily and introduced self service, which was then rare in pharmacy.
S. Connor and Sons was the parent company of Connor’s Chemist, Ireland’s largest pharmacy group, employing around 650 people across 34 stores until it was bought by Boots in the mid 1990s.
