I have been looking at the Griffiths Valuation lately and didn’t know what some of the abbreviations and terms meant.
In the landowner column the word ‘Reps’ meant that the landlords legal representative negotiated directly with the tenant and received rent for the land.
If land is recorded as ‘in fee’ then the occupier owned the land. Here is a page that explains what LAP stamped on some properties/land in the revision books.
This article is by Dr Pamela Marshall who describes the lives of her father and grandfather whose profession was the family doctor for Markethill, Co. Armagh and the surrounding district. It gives a fascinating account of the patterns of practice, diseases that affected the community and the expectations of the patients in a rural practice.
Catholic Parish Registers are a rich source for those tracing their Irish ancestors and is available free. Dating from the 1740s to the 1880s, the parish registers are considered to be the single most important source of information on Irish family history prior to the 1901 Census. These parish registers are the records of the Catholic Church and really, given that the time period coincides with the Penal Laws, it’s amazing they managed to keep such a good account.
Fantastic Exhibition, well worth a look around.
