Oxford Island Description

General information

Oxford Island is located on the shores of Lough Neagh; take the Lurgan exit, Junction 10, off the M1. Owned and managed by Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council much of the area is designated as a National Nature Reserve due to its wide variety of habitats such as reed beds, open water, wildlife ponds and wildflower meadows.

The site has a number of facilities including a network of trails, birdwatching hides, the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Kinnego Marina and the Waterside House, all of which give visitors to the site excellent opportunities to get close to nature. The richness of the wildflower meadows, woodlands, shoreline and open water means that there is always something special to see. Information panels throughout the Reserve maximise the visitor's enjoyment of this valuable site.

Access to Oxford Island and the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre is free of charge.

Hello everyone, just a quick post to say that a small black and white male dog was found abandoned at Oxford Island today at the Ranger Station on the reserve. The dog had an injured paw and was looked after by staff on-site and taken to William Street Veterinary Clinic in Lurgan to be treated. Thank you to the vets and staff for looking after the poor animal and for treating its injuries.
If anyone knows of the owner or knows anyone who has lost a dog in the local area please contact Andy at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre on 028 3831 1673 or the Kinnego Marina on 028 3832 7573

Hello again. Just a quick update to say that while the main roads have been cleared of storm Eleanor we still have some fallen trees around our forest pathways that will prevent access.

We took our children here for the 1st time yesterday and we loved it! Such a beautiful place that exudes peace, tranquility and natural beauty.... a safe place not only for the natural bird and wild life but also for families with small children to visit... there is so much to see, do and enjoy. We will certainly be back soon!

Such a gorgeous place! Used to go here a lot as a kid but went with my boyfriend yesterday and it was the first time either of us had been there in almost 10 years! Great day out and lovely places to have picnics :)

User

Oxford island on a warm summers day is excellent for the kids if they want to play in the water beside the park..The only problem is the water is very very dirty and the bottom of the water and the surface is very slippery and dangerous..The kids can play all day long as they are not bothered about the dirty water..it would be great if ABC council could maybe do a bit of work to the water area and make it more safer for the kids and maybe change the water every so often if possible..this place has the potential to be a gold mine for the council during the summer months..Excellent restaurant beside it also & lovely walks..just hope the flies arent out or your in trouble..

User
