About Portadown Dance College

Portadown Dance College specialises in Ballet, Modern and Tap dance under ISTD. Examination and Festival opportunities for all. Fully Qualified Teachers.

Portadown Dance College Description

Established over 30 years ago as the Donna Whitten Dance Studio, Portadown Dance College is one of longest running and best known dance schools in the area.
We provide children with the opportunity to entre examinations in Ballet, Tap and Modern under the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance as well as take part in dance festivals and competitions all over Northern Ireland.
Rachel Stanfield (Principal) is a fully qualified ISTD teacher with a degree in dance instruction and a degree in dance education. We are also one of the only schools with an in house singing teacher, Christine Fairley. Who can also offer examinations and festival work in Musical Theatre.

We believe that everyone deserves the chance to dance! So along with our set syllabus classes we have added extra to our timetable this year. With Hip hop, Zumba and adult Tap lessons we have something to suit everybody and we would love to hear from you!

YEP!!!! Can deffo relate to this right now!!!
When people ask me what I do for a living I often receive a “aw that must be lovely” response but in my head there is always this underlying assumption that they must just think i spend my day’s skipping round the studio having fun.
... Don’t get me wrong we do spend a little time working on our skips 🤣 but there’s so much more that goes into teaching dance (especially at festival season)...... your whole life for example. Lol.
As well as long hours teaching in the studio there’s.... * Creating class plans that not only concentrate on technique but improve performance skills * Timetable planning so that each competitor, each duet and each trio can be seen in their own private slot * Selecting the perfect solos, duets/trios and groups for each individual and competition * Finding, downloading and cutting hundreds of music choices * Sending multiple videos and cut pieces of music to each competitor for each routine that they do * Prop designing, sourcing and organising transportation to and from festivals * Bulk costume sizing and ordering for group work * Advising and approving all solo and duet/trio costumes * Completing a series of festival entry forms and online documents * Gathering, checking and forwarding on entry fees * Organising and booking on stage group rehearsals at selected venues Not to mention the endless hours and hours of choreography (these days usually done in the very early hours of the morning)
These things are all done outside teaching hours. Outside time I am actually getting paid for and it can very easily take over your life, even while trying to juggle looking after two gorgeous little boys at home (2yr old & 8 month old) and being a good wifey to an amazing husband.
So why do I do it??? Cause..... I LOVE IT!!!! I love my school and I love all my students!! 💕
I try my utmost to go above and beyond for them each day and I will continue to do so for as long as I can. Sure theres moments when I feel like pulling my hair out as there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day but when I see them on stage smiling, confident, proud of themselves and what they have achieved, full of life and having the best time with their friends it is all worth while.
The joy of Dance is a beautiful thing and to be able to pass this on to my students is a honour and a privilege.
So keep working hard girlies cause I’m working hard for you.

Was lovely to have one of our former pupils Becky Richardson back in the studio tonight putting our seniors through their paces.
Becky is currently studying the BA HONS MUSICAL THEATRE COURSE at the prestigious MGA Acadamy in Edinburgh where she has been placed in the highest streaming classes for each genre, was selected to perform in 4 dance pieces and the opening number in their winter show (which is unheard of as a first year) as well as having the highest mark in her yea...r in her Christmas assessments!!!!
Proud is an understatement. 💕👏
Keep up the great work Becky!!! You are a star in the making and I’ve known that since “fabulous feet”!!! 😂
Amazing to see you follow your dreams and push yourself to be the best you can be.

Proud to be a fully QUALIFIED ISTD Dance Teacher...
After dancing for 16 years under the tuition of Donna Whitten and taking numerous graded and vocational examinations in Ballet, Modern & Tap (and one in national I might add) at the age of 19 I went on to spend three years attending a prestigious private teaching college in Kent, England... The Deborah Capon College. This is where I proceeded to undergo multiple physical, oral and written examinations in all aspects of dance... training. Proudly obtaining high distinctions in all Advanced levels (Ballet, Modern & Tap) as well as in my DDI’s (Diplomas in Dance Instruction) and DDE’s (Diplomas in Dance Education) in my three chosen genres.
Covering areas such as... * Lifespan (child development mentally and atomically) * Health & Safety (in the work place & when working with young people) * Legal requirements needed for operating and running your own dance school (insurances, police checks, licences etc) * Contextual studies to Chosen Genres (studying how the dance world has been impacted and influenced by significant Dancers/choreographers) * The relationship between music and dance in the chosen genre * Lesson planning and adaption when needed as well as teaching evaluations * Assessing Safe Dance Practice at all times * Different teaching techniques, methods and how to implement them on a group of children with different learning preferences * How to train different physiques and learning abilities, all the while creating an all inclusive atmosphere * Dance teaching practice (where you are actually assessed teaching classes)
I have also recently went on to achieve my training in the new ISTD inter foundation Contemporary syllabus, Zumba fitness and Progressive Ballet Technique Training, not to mention starting work towards my ISTD licentiate qualifications.
I want to be the best I can be for my students, the same way any parent only wants the best education for their child. You wouldn’t send your child to a school where the teachers weren’t qualified so why should dance be any different?
ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) is one the worlds leading dance examination bodies were students can not only use their dance exam results as a benchmark of achievement but as a U.K. recognised qualification such as UCAS points when applying for universities and other higher education institutions.
ISTD encourages dedication, strong work ethics, discipline and of course a true passion and love of dance.
Proud to be qualified, Proud to be part of ISTD.
