While our lunch was ruined by a table of complete lushes being VERY drunk and loud/offensive/swearing constantly, the manager was more than kind and apologetic to us and our 4 year old son who heard every word of said table. We left with a much better view than we would have had the manager not come to see us once we complained to our waiter. Lovely food, beautiful decor. (shame that the offending table were two bottles, possibly more, of prosecco deep at 2 in the afternoon. Go to a bar ye mad hallions)

What a breath of fresh air for Derry, and a break from the norm! Called into Primrose this evening with my husband and two young children. Couldn’t fault it at all. The menu offered a number of different dishes, and the food we each selected certainly did not disappoint. Ambiance was relaxed and inviting, and the service was both efficient and friendly. We look forward to returning. Definite thumbs up all round!

Went today with my friend as won a Facebook comp for free breakfast for two, the staff in there so lovely and not to mention oh the breakfast to die for. Can't wait to come back already

We had the most amazing meal on Saturday night everything was well presented and tasted so good . The mussels starter and the goats cheese was really good I had the hake and it was the best fish I had had in a long time service was excellent will definitely be going back again soon .

User

We are on a weeks holiday and already visited here twice, food was so nice, wonderful service and highly recommended! Good portion sizes and the patisserie deli part at the front of the shop was delightful. Great coffee and cakes.

Was chosen as a competition winner lunch for 2 so took my son and brought my other 2 sons with me. I read quite a few mixed emotions reviews about primrose but have to say from the moment we walked in we loved the atmosphere. The food was delicious from start to finish and 2 of my sons are quite picky eaters..they cleaned their plates. Definitely ignore the negative reviews it's worth a visit..will definitely be back for a nice family lunch. Thanks for your hospitality primrose. Xx

Visited yesterday to see how the new premises were working out. Have to say I was mightily impressed. Great dish of Hake with chickpeas and chorizo that was a steal at £10. Big investment for the owners and I wish them well with it. A great asset to the City of Derry

I've read some of the negative reviews here and while accepting that everyone is entitled to their opinion, think it harsh to trash a newly opened business in such a public way. It's not as easy as some might think.

* agree with comments about tea pots and cracked cups, need to review that Primrose!- just in case you think I'm a plant.

Congratulations to all at Primrose

Place and food looks great in the store. Takeaway on the other hand is a nightmare. Ordered a simple sandwich and the server didn't know where to start. And trying to package it for takeaway took him 4 attempts. The last attempt was to toss it in a brown paper bag and hope for the best.

Edit*

After getting in touch with the store not only was the order replaced to prefection but the staff were so apologetic. Customer service at its finest!

Lovely staff amazing food woukd highly recommend it to anyone looking for good food with a view

I have been twice to the new premises. Once for breakfast which was brilliant, I got a beautiful fry and a vanilla latte. Top drawer. I just recently visited for evening dinning and it was yet again superb. We had the chicken liver pâté and mussels for starters, beef cheek for mains and the brownie sundae for dessert. It was top class. I can’t wait to come back. Thank you.

Had a meal in here last night for my hen party & it was perfect from start to finish! Thanks to Kieran & all the staff for looking after us. Couldn't have been better!

User

Had a fantastic experience of you food and hospitality last night 30th Dec.

Was meeting an old friend who I had lost contact with over 13 years ago. We were still chatting and drinking by 11:30pm. Your staff worked around us completing the duties for the night and never once pushed us out the door. Food and service, highly recommended. Your staff are amazing. Great personallities all around. Sorry I have no names was to busy talking

Dont normally comment on restaurants or cafes until i have eaten there at least six times as consistency is something hard to find in establishments these days, but today i had my sixth visit and it was every bit as good as the last five.

The Primrose is for sure leading the culinary scene in Derry with a patisserie/cafe to the front of the building serving pastries as good as youll get in any Parisienne shop front and a slightly more formal approach to the back serving a beautiful modern a la carte menu at lunch and dinner. Dont get mislead by the term (cafe), this place is serving some serious dishes executed brilliantly by a very talented kitchen team whom take there food very seriously and served up by a friendly efficient and knowledgable front of house team.

The ambience has a contempary European feel giving you the option to put on your best shirt and go all out, disect the wine list and make a whole evening of it, or drop in for a quick casual bite and sneeky cocktail.

The Primrose wont be for everyone, (no 30% of here im afraid.) but if you enjoy todays culinary scene and have high expectation no were else in Derry will come close. I am so glad they have taken this approach as so far it seems to be paying off. I hope Derry folk embrace the Primrose because it reminds me of the standard of eateries on Exchequer street in Central Dublin serving similar brilliant food at the double the price!!

All the best Primrose...my first choice every time!!

Called for Brunch on Sunday. We both had the scrambled eggs ( with chorizo and manchego cheese). Place was buzzing, food amazing, so much tempting fare ! Nyum nyum highly recommend Primrose.

User

Good, however dont try and rip your own customers off..... we only sell large coffee at the clipper at the more expensive price....no signage to say otherwise.....bad idea Primrose....

User

Was here on monday morning. 3 scones and coffees. Was shocked for one that the scones didnt feel or taste like they were made fresh the day 10am. Secondly we were given a dish with a circle of butter between us . This didnt even butter one half of one scone . Had to ask for more and again was only brought a small amount so had to just use the jam . Im glad i tried it as i will never be back .

User

This place looks very inviting so I thought I'd give it a try as I've been to their other outlets and enjoyed them. I found the menu unexciting and not to my taste at all. Ordered my food and wasn't expecting to wait nearly half an hour for my starter. The place had only 3 occupied tables so this wait was really unacceptable. Sorry folks, I urge you to try somewhere different ! Not a great experience at all !

Me and my family are usually big fans of Primrose. We went for lunch on a Saturday a few weekends ago in the new one on the Strand Rd as we were excited to try a Primrose lunch rather than going for our usual coffee or breakfast. The premises itself on the Strand Rd is beautiful and has the potential to be an amazing addition to the food scene in Derry. We however found the food and overall experience extremely disappointing - the portion sizes for the main courses looked and felt more like starters, we finished them thinking ‘was that it?’ especially for the prices we were paying as well. The items on menu and the specials were also a bit confusing and misleading as to what they were and not to mention that when we finished and paid the bill, we weren’t even asked how was our meal by the staff.

Overall we left feeling disappointed (and also very hungry). It’s disappointing to see what was one of my favourite places in Derry to eat and have coffee in, begin to feel overpriced and uninviting, especially considering the competition in the city now. I’m sure I’m not the only person feeling the same way

I finally decided to visit Primrose on Strand Rd yesterday at around 3:30/3:45pm after seeing lots of wonderful instagram posts.

Unfortunately, my experience wasn't as positive as I would have hoped.

A friend and I entered to be greeted by a dimly-lit, empty-looking store front. There was no staff around to greet us and no "flow" of the layout so we didn't really know if it was closed or if we should seat ourselves. Thankfully, two women entered after us who approached a waiter who sat them to a table. Once I approached the waiter, I asked for a table for two and without so much as a hello, he instantly informed me that "we aren't serving hot food until 5 but you can have a drink or a sandwich if you want".

Considering I thought Primrose was a café and a restaurant, I was taken aback by him advising us we weren't all that welcome. He left us to find our own table.

About 15 mins later, he returned and asked what we would like...we weren't offered a menu or advised on what was on offer today so we ordered a coffee and a hot chocolate, no marshmallows/toppings. He swiftly walked away before I could finish my sentence or ask about the beautiful little cakes or scones available that I had seen on Instagram.

When our drinks arrived, the hot chocolate did have all the extra toppings but we decided since we couldn't find the waiter again we would say nothing.

When we decided to leave I was very unsure about how we paid as the waiter wasn't around to bring us a check nor could we see a clear "pay here" type station so we simply followed another customer to a till, advised the woman (who was lovely and chatty) what we ordered. If she was the first person I had met that day, I'm sure my experience would have been entirely different compared to the standoffish waiter in an empty hallway.

We actually left and went to the coffee shop next door for the sweet treat we so fancied with our coffee.

While the establishment itself was very beautifully decorated and the instagram campaign makes my mouth water daily, I'm not sure I would return to Primrose as I felt awkward and in the way despite being assured they were in fact open. I didn't find the staff very pleasant, except for the one lady on the till! And the lack of flow or guidance upon arrival leaves you feeling a little out of sorts, lost and at times, unwelcome when you disturb a waiter.

I was so hoping this could be my new go-to as it is just around the corner and appears so similar to my favourite local coffee shop in Switzerland. Unfortunately, it's just not for me!

Regardless, I wish you all the best in your beautiful business and I will continue to be tempted by that instagram page haha! ☺
