Qub Philosophy Society Description

The Philosophy Society at Queen's University Belfast, formerly known as Academia Philosophorum, is a society founded and run by philosophy students at QUB that is open to students and staff from any subject. Members of the public are also generally welcome to our events, too!

We try to hold meetings at least once a month. At our academic events, a member or invited speaker will present a paper on a philosophical topic of his or her choice, followed by a discussion and a wine reception. Past topics have included (but are not limited to): 'Existentialism', 'Judith Butler, Feminism and Queer Theory', 'Does God Exist?', 'Nietzsche and the Death of God', 'The Space of Reasons', 'Ethics of Jacques Derrida', 'Debate on Faith and Belief', among others. Don't let the topics intimidate you! The mingling of undergraduates, postgraduates and staff is something we try to encourage, such that there is always someone to whom you can ask a question.

The Philosophy Society believes in the eternal value of a classical education steeped in the arts and humanities. The Philosophy Society does not prize the pursuit of either wisdom or knowledge as simply a means to some technical end, but sees that pursuit as a goal in itself and something to be celebrated. To that end several members of the Philosophy Society are active in student politics and are engaged in campaigning for greater recognition of humanities based subjects.
