Royal Ulster Yacht Club

Royal Ulster Yacht Club Description

History
The Club was established in 1866 as the Ulster Yacht Club, on the impetus of Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava. In 1869 it received a Royal warrant. The land for the clubhouse was purchased in 1897 and built by architect Vincent Craig (brother of the 1st Lord Craigavon).

The "boating grocer", Sir Thomas Lipton, launched his America's Cup bid from the RUYC in 1898. Lipton continued to sail from the Royal Ulster until 1929; his legacy being the Lipton Room.

Today the Club's patron is Her Majesty The Queen (a position Her Majesty has held since 1953) and the Commodore is Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester.

Our neighbours Ballyholme Yacht Club are celebrating their Centenary Year in 2019. To mark this they have an exhibition in the Long Gallery at the North Down Museum.
"Ballyholme Yacht Club Centenary - this exhibition marks the long and interesting history of Ballyholme Yacht Club from its foundation 100 years ago. In the late 19th century, several attempts were made to start a second yacht club in Bangor. When World War 1 began and members went to serve in the war, the club had to close. In 1919, after a regatta in Ballyholme Bay, the club was revived and Ballyholme Yacht Club (BYC) as it is still known today was created." (North Down Museum 2019)
