About Sea Glass Ireland

Handmade jewellery & art made from authentic Irish sea glass, sea pottery and other treasures collected from the beautiful beaches of the Co Down coast.

Sea Glass Ireland Description

Sea Glass has been tumbled on the ocean floor, smoothed by the waves and sand, and washed up on the shore- a jewel, waiting to be found by a lucky passerby. Each piece of glass has its own story of how it came to be in the sea. The very nature of sea glass means that every piece of jewellery is an original. The glass we use in our jewellery comes from the County Down Coast.
Sea glass is glass found on beaches along oceans, rivers or lochs and has been tumbled by the waves, water and sand, creating smooth, frosted shards of glass. It can take many years for sea glass to be formed, but it is highly dependent on the make- up of the shoreline and the level of wave action. The location that the glass is found at mainly dictates its shape, for example glass found on the east coast, is likely to be flat with rounded edges, whereas more rounded pebble shaped glass is more typical of the west coast.
Sea glass is sometimes called mermaids' tears, the story goes that mermaids could only come onshore in the light of the full moon, and as dawn broke they shed tears as they were obliged to return to the seas, these tears were said to be transformed into rainbow coloured glass.
