The first single from the upcoming album by Chicago Typwewriter was released today!
Interesting fact - on the first drum recording session in Start Together Studio Belfast, we finished up our planned tracks a little early. When I asked if they had any other tracks we could start on, Ryan smashed the drums out for A Warrior's Will in 3 takes.

So the latest Romeo Indigo Romeo single was released on Monday, and I had a great time working on this! The dynamic contrast between the verses and the choruses was a particular mixing challenge, trying to make both of them sound good! Had a particular bit of fun hiding an 8-part harmony into a riser effect, too.

It's been quiet on the page for the past few weeks, but I've been hard at work on various projects, a few of which are culminating very soon.
Sarah McCreedy Music and I, along with a few friends, spent a day in Start Together Studio Belfast at the end of December recording her next single "City of Broken Dreams". It's a great song which, mixwise, fell into place almost instantly due to Sarah's great arrangement and songwriting. You can read an early review here courtesy of Ben Magee of Applause Music.
A special thanks to Ashley of Zool Records who smashed the drums on the day for us and James McCreedy who shredded the electric guitar. Check the single out when it drops on Friday 15th February!

MIXING MONDAY! Finishing a few singles this week, really happy with how they’re sounding. . Pushed the boat out with some mixing techniques that I hadn’t used before, particularly when it comes to drum room mics and gating kicks and snares! I found that my gates weren’t opening properly even with the look ahead function, so I duplicated a kick and snare track, keyed a gate on the kick or snare bus from the duplicates and nudged the duplicates backwards in time until the gates... were opening with the transients intact! A little fine tuning had them exactly where I wanted them. . . Have you guys been using any strange or startling techniques recently? Another great day in Start Together Studio Belfast on Saturday. Drums and bass for the upcoming Romeo Indigo Romeo EP with the brilliant Chris Millaron the drums and Adam Woods (formerly of Midnight Transmission on the bass. Spent a few hours tuning the kit up nicely before setting up any mics. Tried a few snares but the Mapex Drums Black Panther won overall. Epic day yesterday tracking drums for Chicago Typewriter in Start Together Studio Belfast. Got a chance to experiment with some real nice kit(s) and got beautiful results. For me the highlight was Ryan Luney’s Ludwig Black Beauty snare, which I decided on a Beyer M201 into a Neve 1073 paired with a transformerless SM57 on the top to give us a thick midrange and a tight top end. On the snare bottom I threw a Sennheiser 441 so I don’t need to dial in too much more high end into... the snare tops and to capture those wires. For the toms I felt the classic hard rock mics - Sennheiser MD421 on the rack tom and a Shure SM7b on the floor. D112 on the inside kick running into ANOTHER Neve 1073 (spoilt) to give a nice thwack and a Wunder Audio CM7 FET to get a nice low on the outside kick. AKG 414 overheads, Blumlein array of Cascade Fatheads in the room. Feel privileged to be using this space and to be working for the Chicago Typewriter boys.
