About St. Malachy'S College

Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School. This Facebook Page is the official page for keeping up to date with the College.

St. Malachy'S College Description

Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School for boys. We take great pride in the history of the College which was opened on St Malachy’s Day 3rd November 1833. The College began with eight boarders and ten day pupils. Today the population has grown to over 1000 pupils. The pupils, with the coat of arms of the Diocese of Down and Connor on their school badge, remain loyal to the rich tradition of the College.

The aims and ethos of the College are based on partnerships. These come in many forms and their success enables the school to be all that it is. We work very closely with our link primary schools to ensure that the transition from primary to St Malachy’s College is a natural and positive experience. We make sure we keep you informed of your son’s progress on a regular basis through our strong pastoral care system. A parent can always speak to someone who knows their child.

St Malachy’s has a very strong Careers Education Department which works in close partnership with a wide range of local companies to provide careers advice and guidance to pupils throughout each stage of the pupil’s education.

WHAT. A. GAME! Our U18 football team travelled to Derry to take on St Columb's College earlier today. They found themselves 3-1 down at half time and then 4-1 five minutes into the second half. The boys clawed it back to 4-4 and the score remained the same after extra-time. Penalties were of the highest standard and thankfully all those who stepped up found the back of the net and Brian Rogers saved their first. Result - 5-4. Scorers (normal time): P.Burns (23), P.Slane (55), P.Burns (60), P.Scullion (68). Pens: P.Burns, L.McGarvey, P.Slane, A.McGeown, M.Mulholland. Congratulations to all involved!

This year we ran a competition for Year 8 students to produce a painting for the College Christmas card. The winning piece is a beautiful watercolour illustration inspired by a detail of the Harry Clarke Nativity Window by the very talented Jia Le Chen. #buddingartist #harryclarkewindows #stmalachyscollege #collegechapel #nativity #christmascard @ St. Malachy's College

'Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference...'
Our St Vincent de Paul Society has donated 20 gifts and 7 hampers to Barnardos, these will go to young adults in their care. 22 gifts and 42 hampers have been donated to Holy Family SVP Conference who look after hundreds of families in the North Belfast area. Our College Conference feels that helping our neighbours is a vital part of our charity work, especially at such a stressful time of the year. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year's appeal!

Adam Ferris' fantastic individual victory leads College U17 team to All Ireland team title in Navan! In horrible conditions, that saw many other sporting fixtures cancelled, Adam just prevailed in a thrilling battle that continued all the way to the finish line. He was backed up brilliantly on the hilly course by Callum Morgan in 12th and Fionntan Campbell in 13th. Oscar Smyth rounded out the scorers. Conall McClean ran another outstanding race to finish 3rd in the U19 championships. Finn Diver was the highlight in the younger ages grabbing a top 20 place in the U13, despite having one of his spikes clipped off at the start. Congratulations lads!

Year 8 Home Economics pupils Sean Loughran and Segdae MacAdhaimh went the extra mile when completing their task on cultures at Christmas Time. They created a beautiful poster and made a ‘ Greek Christopsomo’ bread at home, allowing all pupils in their class to get a taste of Greek culture. A fantastic assessment carried out to a very high standard - well done boys!

This afternoon, the Year 8 rugby squad had their first taste of competitive rugby, at the Ophir RFC rugby blitz event. They performed excellently and it’s also fair to say that they had a great time! 🏉

Thirty Year 10 students were involved in a History workshop facilitated by the Nerve Centre and HMS Caroline Museum on the 6th December 2018. This workshop was a follow up to their visit to HMS Caroline in October, where the boys discovered more about the warship’s role in WW1 and WW2. In between the visit and the workshop, they were asked to be the first students to critically review two new graphic novels about the HMS Caroline’s role in WW1 and WW2. The workshop focused sp...ecifically on producing an audio broadcast on the Battle of Jutland (1916) using GarageBand. This involved writing and editing a two-minute script with sound effects. This task increased the boys’ historical knowledge as well as developing many transferable skills. The History Department would like to thank the facilitators from the Nerve Centre and HMS Caroline for all the efforts in putting together this exciting and enjoyable programme of events for our students.

The College U18 football team won 2-0 vs St Joseph's, Derry at Mallusk today. Goals from McDaid (37) and Scullion (47) help them advance to the 1/4 final of the NI Cup. Fair play to Brian Rogers for stepping up as keeper in the absence of Ronan Gribbin who attended an Ulster Colleges All Star Gaelic trial with Cormac O'Rourke. We wish both students the best of luck!
