We’d like to say a great big thank you to all at Killeen Hardware for supporting the Stroke Association at their recent Trade Fair and Breakfast morning. A fantastic event and an amazing £493.65 raised. Pictured are Helen Graham and family who were instrumental in the organising of this fundraising event. This fantastic sum of money will help us support stroke survivors and their families here in Northern Ireland.

What will you bake this October? Stroke survivor and keen baker Kim Calhoun says, “After my stroke I was baking nearly every day. It was like therapy for me. Baking has really helped my recovery both mentally and physically. My specialities would be Pavlova and banana bread!” Do you have a speciality or favourite treat you like to bake? Tell us about it in the comments below #GiveAHand and Bake. http://www.stroke.org.uk/gah

We have 13 stroke support groups that meet right across Northern Ireland. You can search for your local group by visiting our website. This week, Lady Sylvia Hermon MP for North Down, called in to talk with members of our Bangor stroke support group. Members found it very interesting chatting to her about life as a Westminster MP and members were able to share their own experiences of living life after stroke. Now this sounds interesting, anyone going? Part of Belfast International Arts Festival In Stroke Odysseys, stroke survivors perform alongside professional musicians, singers and dancers to tell their stories: of who they are, who they were, and the journey they’re on.

Stroke can change your life in an instant. Whether it’s happened to you or someone close to you, our My Stroke Guide is here to help support recovery. Soon after his stroke, Rick was referred to My Stroke Guide, and helped out with testing the website while it was being developed. Even though he was further along in his recovery when he started using the website, Rick quickly saw My Stroke Guide as a new opportunity to learn more about stroke, and to practise his communication skills. “My Stroke Guide is important to me. It’s a marvellous tool to foster communication, and I am much more confident. My writing has improved a lot through answering questions and supporting the other users.” Take a look. https://strk.org.uk/2MNBVNs

Our online #MyStrokeGuide community connects you to thousands of others so you can share stories and tips and find out how they manage stroke recovery. Three years after her stroke, Claire discovered My Stroke Guide. “Reading comments from other people who were feeling the same as me helped me to realise that I wasn’t the only one. I would recommend it to carers too. I couldn't express how I was feeling to my mum, so I told her to go on the forum. She read the messages from stroke survivors and carers and that helped her to understand what I was going through.” https://strk.org.uk/2MNBVNs
