About The Downshire Arms Hilltown
History
The Downshire Arms Hilltown Description
The Downshire Arms first opened to the public in 1824. Sixty years on, The Handbook Guide to Carlingford Bay, described it as a ‘comfortable well kept Coaching Inn’. By the 1970’s though, the building had been allowed to fall into dereliction. Fortunately, it has since been rescued and restored by it’s current owners and refurbished to an excellent standard, providing guests with modern comforts without compromising the charm and character of its distinguished past. The Downshire management are still striving to ensure that travellers in the Mournes will find The Downshire Arms a comfortable and well kept place to stay.
The Present Day
Although no longer classified as an Hotel, The Downshire Arms’ facilities are second to none. The stylishly designed Bar and Restaurant are complimented by seven self-catering courtyard apartments (originally the stable block) and two function rooms, one with a spacious terrace. There is musical entertainment every weekend and don’t be surprised if, whilst sitting in the bar, someone starts playing a whistle or fiddle. It’s that kind of place. Coach parties are welcome by prior arrangement.

just back from a seven day stay at the hotel . 5 star treatment we received through our stay. Pauline and her staff are fantastic , helpful and go that extra mile to accommodate our needs. food was fantastic and again staff so friendly i can not think of one negative towards our stay. we will be back
Will be going to this place from now on on a weekly basics have been twice now and loved everything about it . The atmosphere, friendly staff, and the food top class really enjoyed the steak sandwich :)
Went to The Downshire Hotel for a last night meal of our holiday in Northern Ireland and had food from the mid week special menu (visited on a Tuesday).
The meal was one of the best we have ever had, restaurant had a pleasant ambience and the food served by amazing staff.
What a wonderful way to end a wonderful holiday in beautiful Northern Ireland.

If anyone is in the area you must visit this hotel for a meal, especially on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings when you can have food from the mid week special.
You will not be disappointed and will end the meal wanting to return.

Went here for a family meal today as it was my nephews 17th birthday the meal was fab plenty of it, place was busy but great service and staff, thanks pauline and staff!!!!���🖒🖒🖒
We often visit and have food, it's a lovely family feel pub, the service is fantastic, the prices are great and we have never eaten all the food served. The quality is really good and My family and I would recommend this pub and will be back very soon
Was there on Friday night for mum and dads anniversary. Great food and great service. Definitely be back!
Today we had our daughters christening in the hotel.
The food was absolutely amazing everyone was more than full.
The staff was extremely helpful and made sure we had everything we needed.
We go here every Sunday for dinner the past 5 years and not once have we ever had a bad meal are service. 1st class restaurant and the owner Pauline and her family couldn't go out of there way enough such nice people. I highly recommend this hotel u will not be disappointed. Many hanks again for such a lovely day xxx
This was our second visit this year on a trip from Scotland to visit family. We all went to the downshire arms and once again wasn't disappointed with the food and our host Pauline and her fantastic staff. Can't wait to return in the near future. Big thank you Pauline x
The Brain Injury Foundation group held our annual Christmas party here for the second time and as before the night was faultless. Really friendly service, fantastic food and great value. Pauline and Jenna went out of their way to entertain us and we thoroughly enjoyed our singer for the evening, John Devlin. He was brilliant. Great feedback from all our members who attended. Many thanks.
My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful meal in the The Downshire on Sunday. The surroundings were lovely and the staff were very warm and welcoming. Will defo be back, would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Had the most enjoyable day yesterday St Patrick’s Day.Everything excellent .Great food ,entertainment and of course drinks.Then to top it all Ireland won the rugby.The granddaughters had a ball.Would highly recommend.Will be back.���
Had my retirement party here, food was delicious, staff and service excellent. Would definitely recommend this hotel for friendliness, bar staff were very good as well.
Had my daughters 3rd birthday party there today. Lovely, helpful friendly staff. First class food. Kids loved the complimentary bouncy castle. Would highly recommend. Christine and Emma were superb to deal with.
Had my daughters 21st birthday party here last night and everything was perfect , the decor and the food was beautiful thank you all , especially Michelle and the bar staff who went out of their way to accommodate us all . Highly recommended �
Had an excellent meal here on Friday afternoon 15th June - fantastic food and very prompt service ( really lovely ensured we had everything we wanted. Nothing was a problem for her) Will definitely be back!
Had a meal yesterday fantastic persecso on arrival kids got bottle of Coke and an chocolates the food was delicious happy Christmas to all xx

Comfortable surroundings.a welcoming fire was just what was needed on such a blustery cold day. The staff were friendly and very attentive.
THe service was excellent. The food was lovely and very well presented. Would definitely go back.and would recommend it to my friends and family. And to anyone looking for good service and good food. ENJOY!!
Amazing food and lovely atmosphere. All the stops were pulled out to make Imogen's christening very special. Santa made a surprise visit with selection boxes and Pauline made sure everything was perfect. Highly recommended.
