alcaneal Apophysitis (a.k.a Sever's Disease)
Calcaneal Apophysitis is a foot condition that often affects sport loving (but not exclusively) adolescent boys (10-14 years old) and girls (8-12 years old). It manifests itself as heel pain on walking, usually in one foot, but on occasions in both feet although at different intensity. Sports including running and jumping are usually implicated.
... The pain is associated with growth plate in the heel bone. There is not much that can be done to stop it immediately. It stops when the growth process is complete in the heel bone, thus can take up to a few years. However, there are things that can be done to reduce the symptoms:
- Adjusting the level of physical activity - Rest - Icing (especially after activities) - Elevation - The use of cushioning heel cups - Reducing strain on the Achilles Tendon - Comfortable, supportive footwear (completely flat soles usually exacerbate the problem) - Gentle stretching of calf muscles before activities
The diagnosis is usually made based on case history and clinical examination.
