The Old Post Office, Lisbane Description

Opened in July 2004, The Old Post Office Tea Rooms are situated on the picturesque shores of Strangford Lough in the village of Lisbane, Co Down, between Comber and Downpatrick.
Dating back to the I840s, the grade B listed thatched building lay derelict for 14 years until purchased by local husband and wife team Alison and Trevor Smylie. Using the original bog oak beams the building was sympathetically restored by local craftsmen to very high specifications. It was extended to provide ample seating and lots of lovely nooks and crannies oozing character and charm.
Apart from the countryside setting… and the friendly service… they have an excellent food and beverages service with everything cooked and prepared on-site.
The Old Post Office has a breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea menu providing good natural food made from locally sourced fresh seasonal ingredients.
It is The Old Post Office’s ‘Pantry‘ which is one of it’s biggest attractions, stocking a wide selection of fresh salads and delicious baked tarts, biscuits, gateau, cakes, tray bakes and hand made chocolates to buy, take away and enjoy at home.

Though an already popular stop-off for locals and visitors to North Down, The Old Post Office’s story has, to date, been quietly told. However word is spreading. Husband and wife team, Alison and Trevor Smylie, are starting to build a reputation across the water, judging by their inclusion in recent articles in the UK national magazines: Womans Weekly and Country Living.
Country Living listed The Old Post Office in their ‘UK’s top 25 tea rooms’ and noted that: “Making the most of local produce, owner Alison Smylie and her pastry chef husband, Trevor are a dream team”.
Alison and Trevor have worked hard to establish ‘The Old Post Office‘ as a haven of calm – an oasis of fine food and drink.
And it is an oasis easily reached, sitting as it does on the Strangford Lough Road halfway between Comber to Downpatrick. The perfect destination on a day out with family, or for a business meeting or a private party.

Went to the Old Post Office for afternoon tea, it was one of the best I have tried! The staff were really friendly and helpful from the moment we walked in and the afternoon tea itself was delicious. Would highly recommend this!

Went for brunch before going to work arrived just as the breakfast menu stopped But the nice lady behind the counter asked the cook if we could order from the breakfast menu and he agreed food was lovely and staff friendly and accommodating many thanks

User

Went for afternoon tea today and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly from the moment we arrived. The food itself was beautiful and the staff were extremely happy to accommodate our dietary requirements. Nothing was a bother.

User

We went for afternoon tea and it was amazing! The staff were lovely, the food was great and what we couldn't finish we were given lovely little boxes with the remainder to take home! Will definitely be back!

User

Was quite worried when I saw the menu as I'm vegan and everything seemed to contain meat or cheese. But the lovely girl on the counter sussed me straight away and couldn't have been more helpful....she was even vegan herself!!! I ended up getting an amazing roast veg panini with cous cous, pasta salad and the most beaut beetroot and Apple salad. The chef was so accommodating.

The girl even told me she had soya milk if I wanted a coffee or tea after my lunch.

Super customer service and lovely surroundings plus awesome food means I will be back here real soon. Thank you so much OPO.

Recently we went to The old post office for afternoon tea... (I have been many times before for great lunches but not afternoon tea) it was really lovely and very good value compared with other establishments, and we were very well attended to.

On our way out we bought some bread.... and I have to say it’s the tastiest, lightest bread I have had for some time..: I returned a couple of days later to buy more...

Highly recommended..

It was fantastic tables set on arrival. Beautiful food hot coffee and tea. The staff were really lovely, even brought a ceramic cake slice with candle lit in singing Happy Birthday. It was overall a most wonderful afternoon. I recommend a visit.

User

I’ve always enjoyed my visits in the past so booked a table for 8 for a birthday lunch. We ordered our food at the counter and were told that it would be brought round to us in the back room. Our meals arrived slowly...20 minutes between the first and last person being served which was disappointing. The food was nice enough but, unfortunately, I’ll not be rushing back.
