A GLOBAL COMMUNITY Did you know that if you celebrate Saint Patrick you are part of a Global Community? Let's meet some members of our extended family - starting with New York which has just celebrated it's 257th parade.
One of the first North American parades honoring the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was held in New York in 1762 by Irish soldiers serving in the British army.
... Early Irish settlers to the American colonies, many of whom were indentured servants, brought the Irish tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s feast day to America and with the dramatic increase of Irish immigrants to the United States in the mid-19th century, the March 17th celebration became widespread. Today, across the United States, millions of Americans of Irish ancestry celebrate their cultural identity and history by enjoying St. Patrick’s Day parades and engaging in general revelry.

Calling all Budding Archaeologists for excavation of Cathedral Hill! Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are coordinating a cross-community excavation will take place near Down Cathedral over four weeks from 31 July to 24 August through Down County Museum
The excavation will be conducted by professional archaeologists from the Archaeology Dept at Queen’s University Belfast – but they are looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help them from across the community! It will be possible for ‘young archaeologists’ and adults to take part in the sessions, between Tuesday and Saturday, as long as they can volunteer for at least 26 hours each. The excavation team is planning to conduct tours of the dig and update visitors about their findings each Sunday afternoon from Sunday 5th August during the excavation.
