About Trinity Community Gardens

Creation of a Community Garden at Holy Trinity Garrison Church, Windsor

Trinity Community Gardens Description

Holy Trinity Garrison and Parish Church is noted as one of the most exceptional Garrison Churches in the United Kingdom. With its Royal and distinguished history, it stands as a testament to the noble memory of over 24, 000 men who lost their lives in the service of the Household Division and remembered on the church’s memorials. But this is no empty mausoleum, a museum to history. This is a large and dynamic church community who are still proud to serve Her Majesty’s Armed Forces of today.
When the ecclesial authorities and Queen Victoria decided that a Garrison Church should be built it was Bedborough who offered the land and once more placed his building company at the crown’s disposal. The Church was built between 1842-44 to one side of the Bedborough Estate and open fields on the other. The Clarence Quarter was described as ‘verdant’ with thriving garden planting throughout, the church and the private pleasure garden in the Crescent. In the following ten years, the Estate was subsequently extended with more villa housing overlooking arable fields.
The desire to create a verdant space around the church will also follow the policy guidelines set by the Royal Borough for enhancements to the conservation area.
Creation of a community centred garden to establish an oasis of calm, a place to sit, have a chat or time to reflect, play space for toddlers and provide a focus for the local community centered in that area of Windsor, with the Church island a meeting place between residents, young families, soldiers, students, shoppers and tourists. It is the intention for this design to be fully accessible with planting for those with disabilities.

The church hosts disparate community groups, toddlers groups, nursery, alcohol and drug dependency rehabilitation, executive job club of Windsor and Maidenhead, the community choir – Claremont Singers, provides public WCs for the Farmers’ Market, hosts many events for the Household Division. We are proud to support our local community and wish to increase the resources available to it.

Installation of large number of benches positioned around raised beds with a planting scheme mostly of shrubs and indigenous trees. Replace inappropriate materials used in the 1950s with those consistent with RBWM’s Claremont’s Conservation Area policy. Planting selected to give a good year round coverage with species that will create a multi-sensory garden for those with impairments.
