About Vault Artist Studios

We are a collective of individuals. Each different but held together by the need to create – to make something come alive and to shape it.
We revive the overlooked, the undervalued, the empty space.

This weekend saw hundreds of people brave the weather and come to our first Make Tower Street teach again. Workshop ranged from painting parties to growing mycelium art, drawing with procreate to making street art in the rain. Many thanks to everyone who came and a big round of applause for all of our Vault teachers. This sets to bed the age old question of what do you do with a disused school. You turn it back into a school.

Ever grown some art? In this workshop bio-artist Jasmin Märker will teach you how to create compostable materials from fungi which can be moulded into any type of shape. You will walk away with a selection of objects in the process of growing, which are fascinating to observe as they evolve.

More surrealist courses @ the Vault coming up.
It’s that time of year dear folks...Time to shake off the mid winter inertia and start making and creating! Join us for our 5 week long Surrealist Drawing Course! Each session will focus on a particular Surrealist technique from exquisite corpses, frottage, decalcomania (ink blots), automatic drawing to synaesthetic approaches to drawing. The aim of the course is to learn novel ways to coax out your creativity, strengthen your c...onfidence in drawing and educate you in the Surrealist movement. Dragos and Wilhelmina are both professional visual artists and self-professed Surreal geeks that will offer you individually tailored guidance. This course welcomes everyone at any stage in their creative journey from novice to master. Materials will be provided as well as caffeinated (and other) refreshments. Sign up to either a Wednesday morning 11am-1pm or Thursday evening 7pm-9pm session at Vault Artist Studios. Yep, things just got surreal. https://visualartists.ie/…/surrealist-d rawing-course-at-va…/

As part of the NI Science Festival Vault member Jasmin Märker is presenting a series of workshops and exhibition that explore how human and non-human people experience and navigate territories. As workshop participant you will have the opportunity to meet a slime mould, the fascinating yellow blob, which remodeled and improved the design of the Tokyo railway system in 26 hours. Translating your own mental explorations of Belfast into biological experiments you will see how slime moulds and plant roots may navigate the city. Tickets are limited, please follow the link in the event page to book your ticket.

This Saturday as part of the Belfast Film Festival Blue Whale are performing High-Rise Low-Rise
Members of the mighty Vault since it's inception, Blue Whale are a jazz punk quartet from Belfast. Their aim has always been to veer away from the trappings of the traditional guitar-centric four-piece and in doing this have experimented heavily with unconventional scales and time signatures. Their cadenced, angular and atonal compositions tread the lines between dance and discord, chaos and intricacy. Their sound has been compared to the likes of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, Television, Swans, Sonic Youth and Slint.

Course number 3 is a blinder! Rob says 'This is your chance to give street art a go. With permission. Like with zero chance of getting arrested. Belfast has some pretty amazing street art murals around the city now and this is your chance to contribute to a new mural at Vault. This is suitable for beginners and we will look at different techniques that will help you translate your designs to a large scale. We will experiment with techniques such as outlining, fades and stenci...ling and have a bit of a laugh at the same time. Please wear warm clothes that you don't mind getting paint on!' You can see some of Rob's previous work on his website at https://www.robhilken.com/project/murals https://www.seedheadarts.com/courses/stre et-art-workshop

About his course Ed says The Painting Party is strictly for adults only. Participants are greeted with a glass of Prosecco and furnished with a table easel, paintbrush and pallet of paints. The class will then be tutored to re-create a painting of a famous painter, such as Monet, Van Gogh. The studio looks out over east Belfast and is cosy, intimate and a great place to make a splash and have a laugh! Ed has hosted similar events for pre- wedding party goers in Carlingford fo...r many years, before relocating and taking it up to the Vault You’ll learn techniques and tips in painting and be taken through each step of the process in recreating the painting… but with a drink… and great music… and with a large injection of craic. The canvas that you take home may not be fit to hang on the walls of the Louvre, but it will be a beautiful reminder of a colourful afternoon.

Our tireless and hard working artists at the Vault will soon be running a number of bespoke courses designed to tease out the creative even in the most inflexible of individuals. Some of the courses have sold out but over the next couple of days we will be posting information about the few where some tickets remain with a bit of blurb by the artist running the course. Like this Ray says 'Here's the deal. You can listen to hours and hours of annoying YouTubers teaching you ho...w to use procreate. All "hey guys" and "don't forget to subscribe" and ads for shit you don't need Or You can spend 2 hours listening to my dulcet tones in a dance studio, chilling, learning shit, there'll probably be puns, but it'll be fun and I promise not to say "hey guys" or sell you shit.'
