Volunteer Services Set Description

Within the South Eastern Trust we are fortunate to have over 520 volunteers working alongside staff in our hospitals and community facilities such as residential homes for both children and elderly and training & resource centres supporting clients with physical and learning disabilities.

Volunteers work alongside staff in a range of roles specifically designed to enhance services. The fantastic contribution they make has helped to improve the lives of our patients and clients.

We welcome volunteers from the age of 16 years. Experience is not always essential. Training and support is provided. Where possible we endeavour to adapt tasks to suit the needs, abilities and interests of individual volunteers.

We want our volunteers to get something back from volunteering. Our volunteer roles can provide opportunities for people to try something new, build confidence, develop skills and gain experience to improve career prospects. Our volunteer roles also offer the opportunity for those who wish to help others and give something back to their community. Volunteering with us enables you to meet new people, develop friendships and have fun.

Volunteers aged between 16 and 24 years can register for the Millennium Volunteer Award Scheme. Providing recognition for volunteering hours achieved in the form of a certificate that can be presented to universities or prospective employers.

Volunteer Services were recently invited to attend the Ex Patients Guild AGM in Lagan Valley Hospital.
Colin Spratt (Assistant Director for Medicine) and Andrew Kerr (Speciality Doctor) spoke at the AGM about how valued and appreciated the work of the Guild is to Lagan Valley Hospital. The members of the Guild run the shop in Lagan Valley Hospital which is an essential service and is used by patients and staff.
We are thrilled to disclose that during 2018/19, the hard work o...f the Guild enabled the provision of Medical and Surgical Equipment to Lagan Valley Hospital totalling £14,279.57. This equipment includes a Cardiac Monitor, a Cold Coagulation Unit and an ECG Machine.
This meeting was sadly Phyllis Magill’s last AGM as a Volunteer within the Guild and SE Trust as she has now retired after an incredible 49 years of devoted service to Lagan Valley Hospital. Volunteer Services would like to take this opportunity to thank Phyllis Magill for her many years of hard work and dedication to the SE Trust and would like to wish Phyllis a long and enjoyable retirement.
Phyllis was presented with bouquets on behalf of the Ex Patients Guild and Volunteer Services

‘Volunteering is a reason for rising in the morning, with purpose.’ Neil Scott, Volunteer Befriender.
Neil has been volunteering for 27 years. At the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust we are so blessed and appreciative of having Neil as a Volunteer Befriender with the Caring Communities Safe & Well Service for the past 3 years.
The Caring Communities Service offers an older person over 65 who is feeling lonely and socially isolated a Volunteer Befriender to call at... their home for a chat and companionship or to go out to local groups and activities.
Neil has been visiting a number of lonely people in the past 3 years. He recalls the time he was first introduced to a gentleman he was to befriend and he asked ‘Do you support Arsenal’ Neil answered ‘No’ and the gentleman said ‘then you’re no use to me.’ Not being deterred Neil said ‘my eldest grandson knows all there is to know about football and I will go and find out from him.’ Neil found out more about football from his grandson and it was the start of a great friendship.
Neil has a bright and cheerful personality, he is inspirational in his approach to life and is great at storytelling and uplifting conversations. He has certainly found his niche in being a Volunteer Befriender with Caring Communities.
‘Neil is a valued member of the Volunteer Befriending team he has been so enthusiastic attending training and events and making new Volunteer Befrienders feel part of our team. On behalf of the South Eastern HSC Trust I would like to thank Neil for his tireless dedication to Volunteer Befriending, without people like Neil we could not provide such a vital service.’ Sandra Glover Coordinator.
As Neil says ‘someone has to take the first step.’
If you would like to befriend an older person who is lonely please give us a call on (028) 9756 6934 or email safeandwell@setrust.hscni.net
