We are thrilled to welcome Sarah Perry, the author of 2016's Waterstones Book of the YearThe Essex Serpent, to Belfast in conversation with Paul McVeigh to discuss her new novel Melmoth.
Sarah Perry is the UK's most extraordinary writer of Gothic literature. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway. She has been the writer in residence at Gladstone's Library and the UNESCO World City of Literature Writer in Residence in Prague. After Me Comes the Flood, her fir...st novel, was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Folio Prize, and won the East Anglian Book of the Year Award in 2014. Her latest novel, The Essex Serpent, was a number one bestseller in hardback, Waterstones Book of the Year 2016, the British Book Awards Book of the Year 2017, was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and Dylan Thomas Award, and longlisted for the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction 2017.
Melmoth is a profound, ambitiously realised work of fiction which asks fundamental questions about guilt, forgiveness, moral reckoning and how we come to terms with our actions in a conflicted world. A compulsive, terrifying and thoroughly modern Gothic novel, and a response to the Irish Gothic classic Melmoth the Wanderer.

This month we are reading Kameron Hurley's The Stars Are Legion.
Somewhere on the outer rim of the universe, a mass of decaying world-ships known as the Legion is travelling in the seams between the stars. For generations, a war for control of the Legion has been waged, with no clear resolution.
As worlds continue to die, a desperate plan is put into motion. Zan wakes with no memory, prisoner of a people who say they are her family. She is told she is their salvation - the o...nly person capable of boarding the Mokshi, a world-ship with the power to leave the Legion. But Zan's new family is not the only one desperate to gain control of the prized ship.
Zan must choose sides in a genocidal campaign that will take her from the edges of the Legion's gravity well to the very belly of the world. Zan will soon learn that she carries the seeds of the Legion's destruction - and its possible salvation.

Staff very helpful - they spent ages helping me to find the book I was looking for yesterday- thanks !!

User

Love this place - the staff are all really helpful and knowledgeable, who also let you wander about browsing without hassle.

User

Knowledgeable staff and great coffee. What's not to love

User

It's one of the best places to go in Belfast if you like a good book and coffee!

User

I love popping in for a coffee and brownie or fifteen.

Pick a book and relax, oh and great coffee.

User

I am 1 Happy Author that my latest books are now stocked by Waterstones! Particularly as I'm an Australian author of Irish descent & this is my Big Break into the UK & Euro market. PLUS as my latest, “Ghosts of the Empire”, is an historical fiction bringing to life the true & untold saga of young Australians crossing the planet to fly Spitfires with young Brits in WWII.

User

Great prices, great atmosphere, great staff, great selection. One of my favourite places in Belfast.

User

Great place to pop in and browse and have some tea or a wee bite to eat and the staff are lovely and very helpful.

User

First visit to Waterstone's for quite some time. Really enjoyed the lovely relaxed atmosphere and the welcoming staff. Special mention to Colin- his expert knowledge and love of his work and Waterstone's reminded me as to why we need to support book shops. Great idea to host workshops of various kinds. We really need that place and space to meet like minded people. Well done Waterstone's. Will be back.

User

Could spend all day, a great shop. Obama Llama great game!

User

Better than the local library it offers more in depth of books in all topics especially History.

User

Best shop with the best staff in town.

User

Absolutely full marks. I brought my book 'Meeting Damian Lewis' in today to see if they'd stock it (it's a fun summer read that just had a 4 star review in The Sun). I was warmly greeted by someone really friendly and professional. Fingers crossed I get an order but it's looking good. Great coffee shop too. Oh, and I'll be buying my books from here in future.

User

Absolutely brilliant shop! Had a great time at the Harry Potter book launch!

User

А lovely atmosphere in the shop. I was pleased to find a reasonable selection of books on knitting. The fact that the craft section is right opposite the coffee shop was the icing on the cake. I was able to browse in peace and ended up buying more books than I planned.

User

I love Waterstones. Dont like the music in the cafe though. Way too intrusive.

User

Café is good, shocking service of bookstore staff however. Dismissive and rude. Very disappointed.

User

Won't be back. Stood this morning waiting in a line of two people. One young lady served the gentleman in front. The other cashier stood looking at his phone and a world of his own. Not actually doing his job. I work in retail myself. And the phone on the shop floor is forbidden. Not surprising people use Amazon. Also your Lisburn seems to have been taught better customer service than your Belfast branch !!!
