BIG transformations on an old graveside in Kilmore Presbyterian Church near Crossgar. Years of vegetation had to be hacked back before we could even get near the stonework. Creeping vines, ivy and moss completely shrouded the walls and surround so this was removed carefully over a matter of hours. In garden cemeteries bye laws forbid the building of full size surrounds or kerbs, but it is still possibe to construct a small surround area which can be easily removed for future burials. The little surrounds juts out no more than a few feet so does not hinder the cutting of grass by groundsmen and means that the area around the base of the headstone looks neat and tidy. Very often the area around the base can become choked with long grass, moss and weeds and look very unti...dy. The following is an extract from a Belfast Telgraph article Headstones in Mid Ulster District Council's cemeteries will be laid flat if deemed unsafe during inspections.The council is to begin safety checks over the coming months at the five main cemeteries it manages.It will check headstones and memorials to identify any at risk of toppling or breaking, before similar checks are carried out on a further 25 old burial grounds which are no longer in use.

Renovating a beautiful old graveside in one of the older sections of the Belfast City cemetery. Many of the graves here have been sectioned up with warning orange tape as they are in a state of collapse, It was great to be given the opportunity to make one of these monuments "safe" again. The kerbs of the grave had been moved by tree trunks lifting them and parts of the grave interior had subsided, so you can see the logic of it being fenced off. The transformation journey wa...s a long one but the results are worth it with a pristine solid looking grave. White quartz marble chippings are a popular graveside stone decoration, but they soon become dis-cloured with moss and dirt and begin to look very untidy. It was a case of steady hand today as some inscriptions needed to be carefully painted . With careful movement and just enough paint it was a meticulous job to follow the font with it wide strokes and thin connecting points. Drying the stone thoroughly too was tricky as the cold morning temperaures were reluctant to rise so we had to resort to the flame torch to dry things off. Re-capping and cleaning a grave will make it look pristine again and this example from Ardglass clearly shows that. The grave was riddled with weeds and had collapsed badly so the interior needed to be recapped and then the sides deep cleaned to remove years of dirt and algae growth. The white marble headstone was badly stained but after deep cleaning it looks bright and white again.
