Life skills are so important at 1271 (Bathgate) Squadron - first aid training is one of our core activities. We value our partnership with British Heart Foundation and St John Ambulance.
Did you know all Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers are first aid qualified? Learning how to deal with life threatening conditions, including mental health is essential. Some staff progress to develop vital skills and qualifications to deliver courses locally for staff and cadets.
Cadets partici...pate in a progressive training programme throughout their experience.
We currently have 32 cadets with BHF HeartStart, 23 achieved St John Ambulance Youth First Aid and 14 cadets qualified in St John Ambulance Activity First Aid!
Will you join our nation of life savers?

Today we feature flying. Meet Cadet Flight Sergeant Oliphant.
Hi, I'm Jack. I joined 1271 (Bathgate) Squadron back in 2013 and have had a brilliant time. I am currently at university - it's my life ambition to fly for the RAF. The highlight of my cadet career would be flying, initially at Air Experience Flying in a Grob Tutlor.
Over the last few years, I have been encouraged and supported by the staff to apply for scholarships, including Air Cadet Pilot Scheme (ACPS) and Roya...l Air Forces Association (RAFA).
This year, RAFA shortlisted me and I was invited to Cranwell to complete a interview and Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT. It was challenging, but I was prepared and up for it! I attended the RAFA Annual Conference and awarded a 12 hour flying scholarship which was presented by Air Marshall Sir Baz North. I had already completed a few flying lessons from birthday gifts but I did not expect the thrill ride I was about to experience. After driving to Birmingham, I began my flying training with the school in a Cessna 152. The aircraft was not familiar to me at first, however with time and excessive practise I was able to master the controls and take flight. About 9 and a half hours into my training I was allowed to go solo. All alone, controlling this small aircraft. The feeling was truly surreal and out of this world. The responsibility for my aircraft. I managed to attain 11 hours and 55 mins towards my PPL license, arriving 5 mins early on my last solo flight. This scholarship was fantastic and was one of the best 2 weeks of my life to date. Making memories I will never forget and I would highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in flight and aviation.
Additionally, this year I was also successful in my application for the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme which awarded me another 12 hours up at Tayside Aviation in Dundee. After applying and hearing I was successful I was super excited to continue my flying training. The 2 weeks were fantastic and I had an absolute blast. Managing to go solo once again in a completely different aircraft (Aquilla A211) I got the same feeling from my first solo, the sheer joy and freedom of it. By the end of that scholarship I was sitting at 24 hours flying towards my PPL, 1.5 hours of that solo.
Wow ... what amazing opportunities - What are you waiting for?
