About 172 At The Caird

Come visit 172 at the Caird.

Address: 172 Nethergate, Dundee, DD1 4HN

172 At The Caird Description

172 At The Caird is a grand old Scottish mansion built in 1840 for a well known Dundee industrialist. This fine property has been extensively and sympathetically renovated to form a large entertainment venue.

The three internationally renowned chefs offer a full a la carte, bar, small plate and lunch menu. All of which represent value-for-money.

The cocktail, wine and spirit offering is extensive and the bar staff have great experience and will gladly provide your own personalised cocktail.

There is a 'club style' lounge which offers live piano and guitar music.

We offer exiting events such as fashion shows, art and design exhibitions, ladies lunches and informal business events.

Our Sunday lunch will become a local institution.

This was a birthday treat from my son. We were well looked after by the staff particularly our waitress (whose name we didn't get!). She was cheerful, helpful and efficient. Our meals were delicious. After the haggis and black pudding bon bons and tempura prawns starters my son had the duck and I had the rib eye which was exactly how I like it. So after a few cocktails we left very happy and would definitely return.

User

Staff are always really friendly with excellent recommendations of their best drinks. If service is busy the staff always make sure to apologise and are with you as quickly as possible. Big fan of their special cocktails, always bringing something new to the table! Whenever I’ve eaten here the service has been exceptional and the food is just as amazing. Could not recommend enough.

Posting on behalf of my sister...

Previously had a very disappointing experience at 172 The Caird when I went for Afternoon Tea with my friend for her birthday. I raised a complaint with them and just wanted to put on a review re how they handled my complaint.

I was contacted by Sam Battershill of 172 The Caird who apologised for my disappointing experience and confirmed that the waiting staff had been retrained on the Afternoon Tea process and as a goodwill gesture I was offered a complementary lunch for two people. I decided to take Sam up on his offer and my friend and I went for lunch last Sunday. I decided to have macaroni cheese, served with fries and garlic bread and my friend choose the fish and chips. Both meals were delicious, piping hot and the portions were also generous. The service from the waiting staff was also excellent.

Sam telephoned me the following day to ask how the lunch was and also apologised for not being able to meet me on Sunday.

After the Afternoon Tea experience I vowed that I wouldn’t return however after the lovely meal on Sunday both my friend and I agreed that we would return in the future.

Just wanted to say thank you to 172 The Caird for dealing with my complaint and also for the complementary lunch. This goodwill gesture was very much appreciated.

I celebrated my special occasion at 172 The Caird last week and it was a brilliant choice, from the planning to the night itself where staff kindly set up decorations and were very pleasant in waiting and service. I would highly recommend 172 for your special occasion if looking for a venue. Seated in the dining area to the right as you come in, it was as if we had the room to ourselves which added to the already relaxed atmosphere. Needles to say but best til last - the drinks (especially the cocktails… recommend the clover club and raspberry mojito) and food were great quality and good value for money. Burgers were delicious. Special thanks to Aileen for making the whole process fun and enjoyable. Will definitely be back again for some more fine food and cocktails!

I booked the cocktail event for my mum, aunts and cousins for Mother’s Day and at first I was a bit annoyed at one of the waitresses (Claire) as she informed us that our booking was for 6 which it wasn’t it was for 5.30pm and we told her this and we were informed when booking that this was the latest we could do, so her respond was “well there’s another class in just now so it won’t start till 6, which wasn’t very nice or helpful, anyway we got taken up the stairs by another member of staff who profusely apologised and made sure we were seated. Roll n 6 o clock and we were introduced to Dougal which I can say absolutely changed our night, we had a blast, had so much fun and never laughed so much from the beginning to the end. He is brilliant at his job and has even taught us a thing or two which I can say is a pretty hard for us especially when alcohol is involved we would highly recommend the cocktail master class especially if you get Dougal he’s is an absolute credit and would definitely do this again. Thank you so much for giving us a great night and a huge massive thank you to Dougal for making our night one to remember

Hired function suite last night for drinks for my sons 30th birthday & we were very pleased with everything. A lot of the guests did not know the place existed & were very impressed with it & said they would definitely return. Would like to give a special thanks to Janine, who was very helpful right from the start, we booked this place at short notice after being let down at the last minute by another establishment and can honestly say we were not disappointed. Many thanks to all at 172 The Caird.

Held a family meal to celebrate my Daughter’s 21st here this week. Everyone was really helpful in the run up to the meal, recommending a great balloon supplier too! The meal was super, something for all from our birthday girl through to her grandparents and the staff were lovely and helpful. Would thoroughly recommend.

Had an amazing time yesterday at Cocktail making class as part of my hen do. Our barman was very good at explaining and showing us how to make each cocktail we chose. Will definitely be back again in the future and would highly recommend the class to friends and family

User

Came for a cocktail making class today and the staff were absolutely fantastic. We had a two course meal followed by the cocktail making that was taken by Sam and Jess. We got to try the new cocktail menu and defiantly will be back for the new cocktails. Thank you again x

User

Been in a few times and the place is lovely. Huge credit to the bar staff who are amazing and don’t complain when given an order of 10 cocktails in one go. I know we must be annoying but they don’t complain at all.

Slight “complaint”: the music downstairs when you go to the toilet makes me feel like I’m about to get grabbed by The Creeper and that my teeth will soon be used as jewellery. I’m hoping one of the bar staff have villain fighting skill to rival their cocktail making skills and I may make it out okay.

Honestly, keep up the amazing work

1st time going to the 172 at the Caird and must say its a lovely restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant. Friendly staff and a big thank you to WaveFm for the meal for being a competition winner!

User

We had an Itison voucher which was very good value. The two main meals (supreme of chicken and fish'n'chips were enjoyable and plentiful. However, my husband had a starter of Cullen Skink and I had tempura prawns. While very tasty, I have to say the price, especially for the soup, was a bit over the top. The Skink was basically a bowl of creamy liquid with a few chopped potatoes and two tiny wee bits of haddock. I would expect more for nearly £8. Similarly for the tempura prawns. Very nice but a tiny little portion for the money.

User

Was really good but would have been 5 * if there was a drinks service on the patio to save customers walking up and down stairs in heels after a couple of drinks

User

Phoned 5 times on 3 different days, no one picked up the phone. Left my contact number on the answer machine but no call back either. Eventually managed to book a table via facebook chat...person on fb was friendly enough. Service was a bit slow on the day, not sure if they were understaffed on a Wednesday evening. Food was satisfactory. It's a pleasant place if you don't expect something exciting.

User

Went for lunch today, arrived and the boy at the computer didn't look at us when we spoke, he just kept his head down looking at the screen, got seated and waited 10 mins before I had to go and ask for menus. Then waited about 15 mins and had to go ask someone to come and take our order. Place wasn't busy when we arrived, staff were more concerned seating up tables than serving customers. Food was ok, nothing to rave about. Don't think I would go back unless the service improves, the worst service I have experienced.

User

Confused that the outside bar doesn't have any of the ingredients to make the 'special cocktails' and also confused to how there are special 'weekend cocktails' that aren't available at 6pm on the Saturday of said weekend. Overall a pretty lackluster experience.

User

Went on Saturday got there at 4pm table was booked for 4.15pm didnt get seated until 4.45pm to which the waiter told us he needed the table for 6pm! Both ordered steak, mine rare and husbands medium. Mine was medium well, husbands was well done (which he can eat) I told the waiter mine wasnt rare and he took it back to the kitchen only to come back and tell me the chef could not cook it any rarer as it was such a thin piece and that I could have anything else from the menu at which point I said, was the chef not prepared to cook me another steak and his reply was NO! Unacceptable and quite shocked that a chef cant actually cook a steak properly. First time eating there and from start to finish was awful, we will not be back for food very dissapointed.

Came for a cocktail making class today and the staff were absolutely fantastic. We had a two course meal followed by the cocktail making that was taken by Sam and Jess. We got to try the new cocktail menu and defiantly will be back for the new cocktails. Thank you again x

Was really good but would have been 5 * if there was a drinks service on the patio to save customers walking up and down stairs in heels after a couple of drinks

Confused that the outside bar doesn't have any of the ingredients to make the 'special cocktails' and also confused to how there are special 'weekend cocktails' that aren't available at 6pm on the Saturday of said weekend. Overall a pretty lackluster experience.
