William Smith - Founder Of The Boys Brigade
William Smith was born at Pennyland House, Thurso in 1854. He died in 1914.

He went to Glasgow at an early age and went into his uncle's business. In his spare time he carried out much church work and also was a member of the Lanark Volunteers.

It was in 1883 that the first meeting of The Boys Brigade was held at North Woodside Hall, Glasgow. The movement spread slowly round Britain and overseas. William Smith eventually gave up his employment to become the full-time Brigade Secretary. In 1909 William Smith was knighted for his services to youth.
