About 3 Scots

This is the official Facebook page of The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

3 Scots Description

The Black Watch Battalion, 3 SCOTS was formed as a part of the merger of the independent regiments of the old ‘Scottish Division’. It traces its routes to The 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment).

The Black Watch began its life in 1725 from clans loyal to the Hanoverian Kings, with a view to policing the lawless Highlands of Scotland. They were formally mustered as the 43rd Regiment of Foot, in Aberfeldy, Perthshire in May 1739. In 1743 the Regiment was ordered south to be reviewed by the King. It was rumoured amongst the ranks that the real reason they were travelling to England was to be sent to the West Indies, leading to a mutiny. As punishment the three ring leaders were executed.

In 1749 the designation of the Regiment was changed to the 42nd Regiment of Foot, giving rise to the nickname ‘The Gallant Forty Twa’. In 1795 a parade took place at Royston where the Regiment were given the distinction of wearing the red vulture feather, for their gallant conduct at the Battle of Geldermalsen; the iconic Red Hackle is still worn by the Battalion today. A second Battalion of the 42nd was raised in 1779. It became a regiment in its own right, the 73rd, in 1786 before being renamed the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in 1881. Together the two battalions have fought all over the world.

Between 1745 and the current day, the Regiment has fought in a vast number of British campaigns and battles, including Fontenoy, North America, Canada, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, the Ashanti Campaign, the Sudan and Egyptian Campaigns, as well as the Boer War at the turn of the Century. They also saw service throughout the First and Second World Wars, latterly with the 51st Highland Division.

The 2nd Battalion left Pakistan in 1948 and returned to Scotland to disband, but it was reformed in 1952 for a period of just four years. The 1st Battalion served in Korea and Kenya in the 1950s and in Cyprus in the 1960s. They went on to complete 11 tours of Northern Ireland between 1970 and 2006. They were the last British battalion to leave Hong Kong after the handover to China in 1997. In summer 2000 it was posted to Fallingbostel in Germany, where it deployed to Pristina as part the NATO ‘KFOR’. In early 2003 the Battalion took part in the invasion of Iraq as part of Op TELIC, before returning to the UK only to be deployed at short notice back to Iraq in summer 2004, ultimately assisting United States Forces in Op BRACKEN, the clearance of Falujah.

Our motto is:

3 SCOTS have recently been competing at the Army Ski Championships in the French Alps. Both Cpl Matthew and Lt Cowie have been representing the infantry and putting in good performances. Cpl Matthew put in a strong effort, finishing 19th in the Super G, while Lt Cowie has had a string of top ten finishes, including a 4th place.
Lt Cowie was selected to go forward and represent the army at the Inter Service Snowsports Championships in Meribel. He won the best newcomer award and could well be in with a chance of representing the Inter services team at the British championships.

3 SCOTS Cross Country team finished an impressive third on Wednesday in another competitive outing, this time at Dreghorn Barracks hosted by 3RIFLES.
A challenging 10km course that zigzagged up into the Pentland Hills proved tough for all, however, a number of strong performances resulted in a podium finish for the team.
Notable individual performances from Maj Si Wright (14th), Lt Fergus Haigh (16th) and LCpl McCaskill (23rd) among 73 tri-service runners from across Scotla...nd.
