UNBELIEVABLE SERVICE -- AND MORE DEPTH OF MERCHANDISE THAN THEIR ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WINDOW AND STORE MIGHT LEAD YOU TO THINK!
This past April, we were in the Borders to visit dear friends before flying to Italy to get married. We had dinner reservations at the Roxborough Hotel for that night -- and my husband-to-be realized he'd somehow forgotten to pack his dress trousers. We were staying in Kelso -- but finding trousers to fit his tall, thin frame is all but impossible here, so it wasn't looking hopeful. (Jeans in the Roxburghe?!)
I remembered there was a very "traditional" men's clothier in Kelso that specialized in tweed and boots and "country gentleman"-type goods (men's and women's, lest I misspeak).
I found A. Hume with no problems. A lot of its merchandise is very high-end, top-top quality and, as my husband had just bought a couple of pairs of good trousers before we left, I assumed that even if the near-impossible happened and something at A. Hume fit him, they'd be very expensive.
We were shocked to find a pair of dark grey trousers we both liked that came very close to fitting him and were extremely reasonably priced. I mean EXTREMELY. Clothes last April were much more expensive in the UK than in the US in general, and these would have been on the inexpensive side here. Wasn't expecting A Hume to have anything in that price range.
We'd checked out of our hotel and were heading down to Bellingham for the night, seeing things on the way, so didn't have much time...and the pants had to be taken up and tailored a bit, surely meaning we'd have to come back the next day at the earliest...
We were STUNNED when the staff said to go along, have lunch, and come back and they'd have them tailored and ready -- which they did.
My husband certainly hasn't forgotten...he keeps mentioned "that place in Kelso" and saying he wished he had another pair of those trousers...So I just went online to find A. Hume and give him the name to see if he can work something out.
