Sunny sunday studio vibes with paintings at various stages of completion #artist #surgeon

Winter is coming... it's getting colder here in Scotland but snow means winter scenes like this recent commission of St. Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh! As much as I loved the discipline of Florence I sometimes just need to let loose on the canvas with wild abandon #surgeon #artist #wild #abandon

Day 1 DONE. So painting in this fashion is brand new information.
The set up is more rigorous, the number of hours painted in one day is more than ever in my life and the concentration needed definitely matches (?exceeds...) a day's operating in theatre.
Loving life (ask me again after 5 days...). Thanks @daniela_astone for the fab teaching so far! Excited to learn more tomorrow! @florenceacademyofart... #artist #surgeon @ Florence, Italy

Oh hi there new easel! To my £10 Works easel that has lasted since 2003 I salute you for your many years of service. Enjoy your semi retirement (I'll still need to for some plein air excursions!) #easelgoals

Garden + colour + sunlight = gives me life. Had such a fun time painting The Walled Garden at Scampston Hall as a commission for my great aunt who turned 90 (!) last month #monetrealness #loveagarden

Back to work today and craving some yakitori cooked over a small barbecue in a restaurant with 7 seats by this man. Take me back to Tokyo! #japan #artonthego

The first of my more "detailed" sketches were these two fabulous ladies having a chat between Harajuku and Ueno. #sketch #artonthego . . . .... My hope is that a sense of their relationship and conversation has been conveyed in this 15-minute pencil drawing.

Last day in Tokyo! This pair made a great subject for the 25 minute journey between Harajuku and Ueno and thankfully sat relatively still! All my "Sketches from the Yamanote Line" to follow! #japan #artonthego

Sat on a tatami sipping tea whilst sketching in a ryokan with these amazing brush-felt tip pens. This "Self portrait pouring tea" just felt right here. #kyoto #holidaynearlyover #japan2018 @ Kyoto, Japan

Injecting some colour in this dancer at the sacred Fushimi Inari Shrine. No photos allowed so quick sketching needed. #artonthego #sketch . . . .... I don't know Japanese, I just copied the name of the shrine from the wikipedia page! 😅 @ Fushimi Inari-taisha

After the joyful stationery shopping excursion I have new supplies! Going to do a series of sketches on various trains and beyond in Japan. This "Sleeping man" was on the Yamanote line from Harajuku to Shianagawa #japan #trainsketch . . . . .... I've discovered sketching on trains are an excellent way to practice fast figurative drawing.
