Job done. Some photos from today and yesterday. Our thanks to Andrew Park & Sons of Strathaven. Every slate perfectly aligned and the ridge now dead level! Inside there is the nice smell of new wood.

Roof repairs at the mill
You will have noticed the scaffolding and tradesmen working on the northerly facing section of the mill roof over the river. It is a section that has given us problems over the years and we have now decided it is time for a complete renewal. The current mill roof dates from 1918, when the mill was expanded in size. At that time (end of WW1), materials were in short supply and hence second hand wood was used for the roofing timbers. This particular sec...tion was re-slated in 1974 and that was the first piece of roofing work on the mill to be done by Andrew Park & Sons Ltd of Strathaven. They have done all our roofing work since and we do recommend them. In 2008 some of the old rafters in this section were strengthened and the lowest six feet above the wall re-slated. That has proved insufficient and hence the total replacement of that section we are doing today. The rafters, sarking and slates are all being renewed. The wood went on earlier in the week and the slating started yesterday. By this time next week the job should be about complete. Watch out for more photos.πŸ™‚

Ducks in the mill ladeπŸ¦†πŸ¦†
This year we have two ducks who seem to have set up home in the lade just up from the mill. We often see ducks in the river but it is unusual to have them in residence in the lade and thus in daily contact with us. At first they were quite flighty but now seem to be getting used to all our activity around them - almost pets πŸ™‚

A sea of apple blossom
Again our apple trees at the back of the mill are almost white with blossom this May. You might remember that we pruned one of them back in the late winter after it showed signs of breaking its back last year, so heavy was it in fruit, and we wondered if the blossom would be less as a consequence but it seems not. Indeed we now wonder if we have not pruned it back far enough to protect it from the prospective weight of fruit in the autumn?!.

Dripps Mill / Waterfoot: Horse and cart – 1902
We know that many of you enjoy seeing some of our old photos of times gone by at the mill. This one was taken in 1902. Today’s customers will recognise the scene well, with the mill on left and the road leading onto the bridge. Quite timeless - take away the horse and cart and this could be a photo from today. The identity of the carter is unknown. Each of the mill carts had its own brass identity plate – the oval item at the front of the cart in this case. The resolution of the photo is insufficient to read the plate but there might just be a number β€œ4” discernible. If this was β€œCart No. 4” then we still have its brass plate – see second photo.πŸ™‚
