About Anstruther Fish Bar

Welcome to Anstruther Fish Bar on Facebook.

Anstruther Fish Bar Description

Anstruther Fish Bar is our family business (2003 - present) alongside our small fish processing company - Argofish, St Monans (Est 1980). Generations of our family have been fishermen from this area since the 1700s, so we like to think we know a thing or two about fish.

We are completely committed to sustainable fish and seafood, and source everything locally wherever possible. By personally purchasing our fish directly from the boats, we can guarantee only the freshest, prime quality haddock goes in to your fish supper.

We work hard to maintain our award-winning standards and are proud to announce we have just been crowned WINNER of THE SCOTTISH FISH ‘N’ CHIP TAKEAWAY OF THE YEAR 2019 and also Central WINNER of The Food Awards Scotland - Best Fish ‘n’ Chips 2019.

In addition to achieving the prestigious UK WINNER of the FISH & CHIP SHOP OF THE YEAR Award, numerous ‘Taste Our Best’ Awards and Les Routiers’ Cafe of the Year Award, we are excited to discover we are also finalists in the UK Good Food Awards 2019.

Visit Anstruther and the East Neuk of Fife and discover there is much more to our area than excellent fish & chips and stunning beaches. Many unique shops and attractions make a perfect day out for all the family.

Launching the first of our mid-week winter soup days tomorrow (Wednesday only). And, what better soup to start with than this traditional, creamy Cullen Skink. Made with our very own 'Argofish smoked' Scottish haddock; a delicious light bite!

A bit of fun with our local First Responders to get this serious message out to everyone.
Never a dull minute at Anstruther Fish Bar! A huge well done to everyone who took part 😃❤️

Our popular Gluten Free event days see customers travelling from all over Fife, the Lothians and Tayside to experience an Anstruther Fish Bar fish supper cooked in our gluten free soy and rice flour batter. This batter is suitable for coeliacs and those with a wheat intolerance. During these Gluten Free event days, we have strict controls in place during preparation, cooking and serving. Our kitchen area is halved and an area set aside exclusively for gluten free prep and fry...ing, in order to avoid cross contamination with any products containing wheat. Outwith these dates, our customers are pleased to hear that our chips are always guaranteed to be gluten free as they are fried separately from everything else. We have excellent salmon & dill fishcakes and smoked haddock fishcakes that are suitable for coeliacs (always make sure you ask for them to be fried GF when you order!) Our smoked sausage is also gluten free if you prefer a 'no fish' option. All our fresh seafood can also be simply grilled to our customers' requirements, if they prefer.

If you have never made the short boat trip from Anstruther to the May Island before, September is a perfect month to enjoy a few hours on this beautiful nature reserve.
Still lots to see and do on the island, including access to the main Stevenson Lighthouse.
More information, plus sailing dates and times, below .....

We love seeing what some of our former student employees are up to these days. Stephanie worked with us at Anstruther Fish Bar a good few years ago while she was still a student at Waid Academy. Always the entrepreneur .... she's now behind this fabulous business, the East Neuk Candle Co. Check out her stand at Bowhouse Market this weekend 😃

We are looking forward to welcoming celebrity pals Sarah Brown, Kathy Lette, Arabella Weir, Sandi Toksvig and her wife Debbie to Anstruther Fish Bar for lunch this afternoon.
They're walking the 117 miles of the Fife Coastal Path to raise funds for TheirWorld, a charity that aims to give children the best start in life.
I'm sure they'd appreciate your support if you see them en route today. They will have collection buckets with them, so please give generously. We also have a collection tin on our counter.

Exciting news this Monday afternoon .... we are over the moon to be FINALISTS in The Food Awards again this year! We visited on 10th of September and were not disappointed. Fast friendly service and delicious fish supper had by the 5 of us . Dessert was highly recommended by Kiah and she certainly knew a thing or 2 about the amazing ice cream . Will certainly return

User

Visited yesterday, long queue but as expected. Fish was lovely and batter was thin and crispy.

Not thick and soggy like most places. Will deffo be back

User

The Gluten Free fish and chips yesterday were amazing and even my Shih Tzu puppy loved the fish. Thanks again. We’ll be back soon.

User

Perfect white flaky haddock in a thin crispy batter. Not greasy and delicious.

Also tried the haggis. Superbly spicy and moist, again in a crispy batter.

New season potato chips which were also excellent.

Careful how you heat the mushy peas folks. A bit on the cold side.

Nice to have enjoyed a visit again last night.

User

My favourite chippy. Never ever disappointed. Food is cooked to perfection every time. Lovely staff and great customer service. Only chippy I will stand and queue for because it's worth it.

User

I just want to say a huge thank you to anstruther fish bar and all the staff for making my daughters blessing meal complete. They managed to fit our party of 15 all together and nothing was a problem. As usual the fish & chips was awesome. I had my first supper from there was I was 18 months old and it has been part of our family visits for many years. Thank you so much and hopefully we will be back soon.x

User

Here today for lunch with husband and kids. It was delicious. Kids thoroughly enjoyed their meals too. Very friendly and attentive staff. Will definitely be back. x

User

Excellent food and service. There's nothing like fish and chips on a harbour-front and these were simply fist class!

User

Been a while since I’ve been but it never fails to impress. Simply the best battered fish I’ve ever had. Good crispy chips too and fluffy on the inside. Nothing soggy or sticking together. Absolutely first class and won’t leave it so long till I’m back. So worth it.

User

Absolutely brilliant and just what I expected.

I visit Scotland (Glenrothes) fairly regularly and have heard tell of this amazing Fish Bar in Anstruther but 5 years after first hearing about it I still hadn’t been, until now. It really was worth the visit. I was told there could be huge queues but there were only 2 of us at that moment waiting. The fish itself was delicious and the chips devine. Add in mushy peas, a coke and a warm evening by the harbour and I had the perfect combo.

I will be back.

User

Sat in for fish'n' chip lunch. Lovely light battered haddock and chunky, hot chips. Tea was a bit stewed. Service was polite and reasonably quick considering it was lunch time and the takeaway queue was out the door.

User

Chips were good. Fish was nice but a little oily, however that's not what lost the star(I'm going to blame expectation vs reality, you hear so much that you expect 50 Michelan star food. Its still one of the best chippies I've had)

What lost it the star was the layout/setup.

If your wanting to takeaway(which we were) you join a fairly long queue and you wait patiently. However if your sitting in you stand at the podium and get seated, then your order is taken right away and bumped to the top of the queue.

We had several families jump ahead of us this way, we were finally up to the friers and a group came in, got seated and got food before we got ours, we had been waiting approx 25mins by the point of getting to the friers...

User

Used to eating fish and chips in Whitby and to be honest not sure what all the hype is about this plaice! It was nice but nothing very special. Decent chips, nearly golden. Fish was nice but a lot of batter. I think we were lucky there was no queue, although 5 minutes later a bus load of American students arrived. So very lucky for us we got there first!!!

User

I had heard it was a great place for fish and chips, so we called in after a drive over to the various towns in the Neuk. Service was as expected - quick and slick.

The fish and chips when arrived looked good. Until I tried to eat it. The fish that was there tasted good enough, but it was a very small thin split fillet that was flattered by the batter hiding it beneath. More batter than fish I’m afraid and for nearly a tenner!

Let’s just say I could have bought better in my local chippy for half the price.

Will I call in again - Don’t think so.

User

I couldn't see any difference from our local chippy but I do live in another part of Fife and feel like we are a bit spoilt here. Fife chip shops are the best around!!! We waited almost an hour which I think was too long to wait and felt the food suffered slightly as the chips were a little under done as they were trying to move the queue along quickly. It's worth a visit for the views alone and my little boy was happy playing on the beach whilst his daddy was in the queue!

User

Been coming here for years and every year it’s been going down hill a little bit by bit... a long way from the halcyon days of a trophy laden chippy it once was with the queues outside

Iwas visiting Anstruther from Edinburgh, and looking forward to a battered fish with glutenfree batter ,but I was told gluten free batter is on the menu on certain days.but not today 27thJuly. I dont think you should be advertising glutenfree unless it is available every day. I was so dissapointed

User

Disappointed. Waited ages to get a seat and then we had to sit at separate tables as they had 2 people sitting in the tables for 4 or 6. When did then get served it was ages until the brought the food. Really small portions...to the point the adults meal was the same size as the kids

User

Didn’t have the best meal... no fish and loads of batter was a tad oily . Very disappointing... bread was on the stale side .. and my tea was stewed , my wife had the exact same meal with the same result ... trading on a reputation I’m afraid definitely won’t be back
