In 1984 Annie and Lachlan Stewart founded the design partnership ANTA Scotland creating original home furnishing collections of textiles and ceramic stoneware. After rescuing and restoring an eighteenth century weaver's house in Spitalfields, they set up a studio in London, living and working from home. They opened their first shop in London in 1990 and returned home to the Highlands to start their pottery and textile manufacturing, building a team by training craftsmen and women locally. In 1995 The first ANTA shop was opened in Edinburgh. All ANTA stoneware is decorated by hand. Elaine Mackay joined the decorating team and now as head decorator is in charge of training, maintaining the consistent high quality ANTA customers expect. The Stewart family moved into Ballone Castle after completing the restoration. Built in 1590, it was lived in for a relatively short time and by the early 1700s it was abandoned, becoming derelict. Lachlan Stewart, a conservation architect, rebuilt it with the help of masons Ian Telfer and the late Duncan Mills. New carpet collections were launched and the London shop moved from Notting Hill to a more central location off Sloane Square in Chelsea. The range of cushions throws and accessories was expanded, to supply hotels as well as domestic interiors. The flagship store in George Street in Edinburgh opened in 2011. Designed by Lachlan Stewart, the style and quality of the local and natural materials used in the refurbishment perfectly complement the ANTA collections. Expanding to the west of Scotland, our first shop in Glasgow opened in West George street. In 2015 The eCommerce site was relaunched and the London shop was opened off Marylebone High Street. Construction began on the new factory and warehouse in the Highlands.
