Following extensive discussion amongst the GP partners, pharmacists and hospital Haematology Consultant we stand by the initial decision to with-hold vitamin B12 injections for 3 to 6mths until the danger from the COVID19 pandemic has passed. We have a duty of care to protect patients, their families and the wider community as much as possible, so risks and benefits of any face-to-face work is being carefully assessed. Our local Consultant Haematologist and the British Socie...ty of Haematology have confirmed that for stable patients missing one to two 3mthly injections of vitamin B12 is unlikely to cause any problems and would potentially be more harmful in terms of the risk of contraction of COVID19.
Patients can be reassured that liver stores last for one year and hence B12 levels will NOT be affected if one to two 3mthly injections are omitted. The recommendation is that doses should be omitted until the COVID19 surge has passed.
Advice is that patients who report symptoms, oral vitamin B12 can be offered as an alternative. If still very symptomatic then a vitamin B12 injection could be given at the surgery so long as patients understand the associated risk of COVID19 with any healthcare staff contact.
We thank you for your understanding during these difficult times.

In an effort to protect patients during the current COVID-19 outbreak, a decision has been made to postpone Vitamin B12 injections. There is strong evidence to suggest that the B12 injection will last far longer than the current 3 month interval. We are, however, looking at individual cases and seeking specialist advice for certain conditions, and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

Due to the current situation with Coronavirus/Covid-19, the Practice is introducing a triage system whereby patients requiring an appointment will be asked to give information to the receptionist as to the reason you require this appointment. If you need access to this please phone between 8am and 10.30am and your call will be triaged by a member of our team. This is to ensure not only your safety but the safety of others and reduce any risk of exposure. The receptionist's ...are not being obstructive in your access to a GP, they are doing this at the GP's request and any information given to the receptionist will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. DO NOT self present at the Surgery. All appointments are to be booked by telephone. If you do you will be asked to go home and phone in. If you require more information regarding symptoms relating to Coronavirus please telephone NHSInform on 0800 224488.
