About Architecture & Design Scotland - A&Ds

A& DS is a NDPB of the Scottish Government that works to promote excellence in design and engage with the development of the Built Environment in Scotland.

Architecture & Design Scotland - A&Ds Description

Through our work we help to implement the policies of the Scottish Government, and while we have involvement across a number of policy areas, our principal policy focus is on implementing Creating Places, Scotland’s Policy for Architecture and Place. We were set up in 2005 by the Scottish Government and we are an executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB).

How we can help:

Our purpose is to promote the value of good architecture and sustainable places.

If you are involved in creating places – whether as a client, agent or funder – we can help you. If you want to learn more about architecture and design in Scotland we have articles and resources on a wide range of topics. If you are a student or professional you can find details about our training and other events.

We have lots of examples of how good design creates better places across our website. You can use our resources tool to gather images, articles and exemplars to inspire you or help you prepare briefings.

We engage directly with development clients on a range of scales, including working on the development of Scotland’s schools and health buildings. Our Design Forum provides dedicated support to a range of development projects across Scotland through workshops and other supports.

We can help people to get involved in shaping their places and to learn more about Scottish architecture and design.

Sustainability is a key factor in our work and we provide access a range of resources on the topic, including a library of sustainable building materials.

The good kind of hacking... when pupils and staff adapt their school to better suit their needs. The Space Pioneers at Our Lady of the Missions Primary School have been testing interventions around their school in cardboard before commissioning new furniture. The Tests of Change process, that A&DS offer free to all schools in Scotland, ensures that investment in teaching spaces meets the needs of the learner. The process gives pupils a chance to explore how their environment impacts their lives and design interventions to create inspiring learning spaces.

Scotland is changing and with these changes come both opportunities and challenges. We are living longer and although this is undoubtedly positive, it also challenges us to think about how we ensure that we live not only longer, but that we live well.
With social #isolation and #loneliness being identified as major public health issues, especially for older people, we need to seriously reflect on how we can adapt and improve our town centres to help combat those challenges.
This report sets out the work that we have been coordinating, together with Scotland's Towns, to respond and support The Scottish Government’s work around Town Centre Living.

The Best Use of Timber 2018 Awards exhibition is now open at The Lighthouse in Glasgow. The winning project is Bath Street Collective Housing in Portobello, Edinburgh, designed by John Kinsley Architects.
Bath Street Collective is a group of 4 families who purchased the site to build a small tenement block containing a bespoke flat for each family. The brief asked for Passivhaus standards and an all-electric strategy that would allow the building to run free from fossil fuel...s. The Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) frame was very efficient to construct, taking just 2 weeks. The CLT is exposed internally; research from the University of Tampere, Finland has shown that internal timber finishes can reduce the blood pressure and pulse of occupants when compared to plaster finishes. The Best Use of Timber Award 2018 exhibition is now on at The Lighthouse in Glasgow. Lochside House by HaysomeWardMiller Architects is shortlisted. It uses larch cladding and prefabricated SIP panels. As it is built on a remote site, offsite construction and minimal site waste were very beneficial. The house is designed to be completely off-grid

In 2009 we published A Vision of Health, within it is this quote by Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland at the time who spoke of:
"An estate designed with “a level of care and thought that conveys respect”; buildings that grow from the local history and landscape, that are developed in partnership with the local community. A work of joint learning and joint responsibility that is particular to that community and that place; “not off the shelf shoe boxes”.
