Auld Reekie Tours Ltd Description

Explore our haunted underground vaults dating back to 1700s, where the poor and destitute once lived alongside the criminal underworld, thieves, and witches who practiced there. A journey into the dark side of old Edinburgh's history. You will feel and sense the terrible slum conditions where the poor and destitute once stayed, in an underground area with no natural lighting, water or sanitation. Tour includes a visit to our medieval torture museum, legendary haunted vault, demonised, old, stone-circled pagan temple, and see a modern witchcraft temple used up until three years ago.

Apparently tomorrow we can expect a sudden onset of Scottish summer in Edinburgh, with temperatures as high as 16 degrees, and a sky only partially overcast with clouds. How amazing! Today, however, itā€™s still looking pretty grim and chilly - a perfect day for a wee walk under the streets. Join us on our afternoon tours, and enjoy the almost warm and nearly cozy South Bridge Vaults.

A stunning view of Edinburgh Castle from the past, but the street is almost completely unrecognisable. Can you guess which street this picture has been painted from?

User

All the snow is gone now, but the weather is still living up to the Scottish stereotype - good thing our vaults are all underground. They are surprisingly warm as well, an excellent place to hide from the elements for a while.

Have you noticed the tiny door cut into the side of the Canongate Tolbooth? Inside the Tolbooth there is a museum and a cozy pub now, but this little door reminds us of darker days. Can anyone guess what it was used for?

Did you know that Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of one of the most popular Christmas stories, was actually a real person? Dickens, onone of his visits to Edinburgh, saw a headstone in Canongate Kirkyard that read ā€˜Ebenezer Scrooge, mean manā€™, and that eventually inspired him to create the famously mean anti-hero of ā€˜A Christmas Carolā€™. Of course, the headstone actually read ā€˜Ebenezer Scroggie, meal manā€™, but Dickens, in a mild bout of dyslexia amplified by his vivid imagination, misread it, and the rest is history.

We went on the 7pm haunted tour with Ewan, our guide. We loved the historical facts, the scary stories based on those facts, and Ewanā€™s sense of humor. Ewan did a great job of putting us in the shoes of the historical figures, and we loved every minute of it. If youā€™re looking for a fun and factual representation of the haunted history of Edinburgh along with a hilarious guide, Iā€™d recommend Auld Reekie any day of the week. Thanks again!

User

We joined our tour guide Ewan for this really informative and interesting tour. It was not theatrical and hokey but seemed honest and respectful to the people who lived and suffered in the region in the 1800ā€™s. it was also hilarious and fun too. We did the graveyard and vaults tour and I was more than a little uncomfortable in the vaults. Iā€™m not easily spooked but it is very atmospheric and coupled with the stories and darkness, it certainly made me more than a little uneasy and I know I wasnā€™t the only person in the tour group. I understand they run a terror tour thatā€™s more indepth but Iā€™m not sure my nerves could take that ļæ½ This is definitely the best tour for Edinburgh ghost stories and the vaults. Just brilliant.

User

We have just visited Edinburgh for a long weekend and our Saturday evening tour with Ewan was one of the best attraction ever. He is very talented, great story teller, very smart and his style is just amazing. Loved every single minute of it!

The ghost tour was very interesting, but I am sure it would not been same good if he would not enjoy his job!

I could listen his stories for days :)

Thank you so much for the great evening!

We will be back for sure!

User

We had a great time visiting the vaults! Ewan (Iā€™m so sorry if I misspelled his name) and his flamingo Alaska were our tour guide(s). We were four people on the tour and it was such an amazing experience. It was definitely not the last time we visited the vaults!

User

This was the second time I have been down to the vaults first for the torture tour and this time for the vault tour, both with auld reekie tours and I loved it just as much this time as last, if not more. I learnt a lot of different things that I didn't hear or the first tour and vice versa making it feel completely different. This time however I had Ewan as my guide and wow what a character he is! I didn't even mind that he constantly tried to remind me that Scotland was better then England (It's not) because he is possibly the funniest queen I've ever met. Not only that but his level of knowledge about not only the vaults but edinburgh/Scotland in general was astonishing. Auld reekie tours in my opinion Is a must and I will definitely come again next time I visit especially when the Scottish weather rears its head and you need somewhere drier to stay! Couldn't recommend this company higher!

User

The volts are absolutely chilling - was incredible hearing all about the history and ghost sightings. I honestly donā€™t think it would have been the same if it wasnā€™t for our tour guide Ewan though.

Heā€™s literally hilarious and made the whole experience a hoot from start to finish.

My wife and I just did the terror tour with Ewan as our guide. The tour itself of the vault was perfectly creepy, dark and damp - everything youā€™d expect. The best part was Ewan, before the tour inside the vaults started he guided us from the royal mile and led us to the Auld Reekie Vault entrance and he was absolutely hilarious - Ewan could easily do stand up comedy. However once we went into the vault he was very honest and real, explaining the history of the location. My wife and I didnā€™t see anything and only heard a few things, but that didnā€™t matter. Ewanā€™s storytelling and the location was enough to raise the hair on your neck and give you goosebumps. I can not recommend this tour enough!

User

My boyfriend and I have just came out of our tour with Ewan and it was absolutely fantastic! The best ghost tour I have ever been on. Ewan was absolutely spectacular, great personality and skill for story telling had everyone laughing and feeling very at ease as well as being very respectful of the stories we were being told. Iā€™ve been in the vaults once before but this time was even better and I would definitely recommend for everyone to go!

User

Lovely and interactive tour guide!

Thank you Ewan! You made our tour super hilarious yet kept it real to the tragic and horrific details of Edinburghā€™s history. It was fascinating and really grounding. My sister and I booked this as a last minute tour and it definitely topped off our last night in this lovely town so thank you!

User

Just heading home after a fab day to Edinburgh to go on the vaults tour with my parents and brother. Ewan the tour guide was fabulous. I've wanted to do one of these tours for such a long time but i am not a sceptic so was a little nervous about it. Ewan knew his stuff, the stories were interesting and informative, if a little harrowing but he lightened the mood. This was well worth it for the insight into the history of the vaults.

User

Just finished the Terror Tour. My husband and I were lucky enough to be the only ones on this tour. Ewan was hilarious and quite cheeky but also very knowledgeable about the history. Hearing all the stories of the events that occurred in the vaults was very sobering and surreal. Thanks again Auld Reekie Tours for making our first night in Edinburgh a memorable one!!

User

Just finished out Greyfriars and Vault tour. Very very creepy. I would warn that the vaults are not for the faint of heart. Our guide, unfortunately I do not remember her name, was a natural born storyteller. Thank you for the great send off to our trip!

User

Had a wonderful time with my wife and two kids. Ewan was full of anecdotes and interesting tidbits about an Edinburgh we knew very little about until this experience. I don't know if I had an "ghostly" experiences since I'm a bit of a sceptic but I did see a shadow walk by... outside of one of the vaults. Bit of my mind playing tricks or suggestion... will never know, I suppose. However we had a great time!

User

Ewan was our tour guide yesterday for the 10pm terror tour and he was absolutely hysterical yet serious where necessary and some of his stories definitely gave me the chills. Despite the large and rather loud group of students, he handled it well and went above and beyond to make the experience for the rest of us enjoyable and extended the tour as an apology for previous interruptions. Great guy, great tour, would 100% recommend the late night tour of the vaults!! ļæ½

User

Ewan kept us entertained and captivated! An interesting and creepy place to visit!

User

Did the tour earlier today got the last tour of the day Ewan was our guide. We were lucky to have him as a guide I haven't laughed that hard on a tour before. He gives a very honest and blunt tour about all things Edinburgh. Great end to my time in Edinburgh.

User

Been on several tours before like The Real Mary Close, Ghost Bus and one with Merkat tours and this as by far the best. I donā€™t believe in ghosts but our guide Ewan really knew his history and brought to life the tales of the old town.

User

Absolutely fantastic. Our tour guide Ewan was brilliant, very knowledgeable and witty. He made some very poignant observations about the harrowing history of the vaults and discussed the incidents and sightings which have occurred. Managed to scare the pants off everyone while never resorting to jump scares or fabrications. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone over-18

User

Absolutely brilliant tour from Ewan tonight. Edinburgh born and bred I found it very interesting and informative with a very spooky edge. Ewan made the tour extra enjoyable with his quick wit and humour. Great night out, would highly recommend.
