Really enjoyed my afternoon at the Avant Garde. Lunch was really nice although l think the chef over done it on the balsamic vinegar, but the haddock and chips very nice. Dessert was millionaire cheesecake mmmmmm.

Had two lovely classes of Rosie wine to help the food to go down.

Avant Garde has the best ceilidh in the world every Saturday. Been going there almost every week for last three years and it only keeps getting bigger and better. Lovely international crowd (always some first timers) dancing to traditional Scottish tunes in a fun and cosy setup. Last Saturday I took my girlfriend (that became my fiancée that night) for a dinner before proposing to her and their yummy food got the night off to a great start which made her very happy and helped to relax my nerves (just a bit :P ).

We had the 3-course a la carte deal and thoroughly enjoyed all six of the dishes (Calamari, Mussels, Seabass, Smoked Haddock Risotto, Millionaires Cheesecake and Fudge Cake) and wine. Their menu has a great variety (plenty of both meat and vegetarian options), so we were spoiled for the choice. We also got cocktails and some other drinks which were all gorgeous too. The service made everything even more enjoyable. The staff was quick, attentive, friendly and provided recommendations to get the best out of the available options. Would definitely go back to try the rest of the dishes. Thanks a lot for making our engagement really special, Avant Garde. Love you <3

Great entertainment on the Saturday. Loved the jazz music and the traditional Scottish dancing later on at night. Bar staff are lovely, prices reasonable and food was good. Mussels were especially tasty

User

Good food , staff very attentive and friendly, would recommend to friends and family

User

Food was excellent. Menu had good choice and was varied enough for our table of 6. Service was poor as the waitress wasn't very good, but we complained about the time it took for our drinks to arrive and the manager took a round of drinks off the bill. One of our friends has been there several times and says normally the service is as good as the food.

User

Been here a few times, service was very slow and the waitress tried to lift my mums plate when she was finishing off her starter apart from that couldn’t really fault it.

STORYTIME: Buckle up children, we're in for a bumpy ride. (FYI I am not one of those people with a 'Can-I-Speak-To-The-Manager' haircut who complains about everything. I am a rather peculiar 22 year-old theatre student with anything but a 'Can-I-Speak-To-The-Manager' haircut.) Our story begins a few months ago when I noticed the aforementioned Avant Garde were hiring staff. I emailed and got offered an interview so went along and met *checks emails* Billy who I believe is the general manager. He was really rather lovely and the meeting was pleasant and he said he would get back to me. Billy then got back to me a few days later saying that unfortunately he hired someone with more experience but thanked me for coming in. Water off a duck's back, I was fine with that. Fast-forward to the present day where myself, aforementioned peculiar 22 year-old theatre student, has now found herself a job in a nice little restaurant and is now occupying an evening in Avant Garde. She is with her family as well as eight other guests from England and Belarus (long story, don't ask). She tried to book a table for twelve earlier in the day but did not get a confirmation so her mother phoned and was told they are fully booked but can make room for us. So we are all there, having drinks and enjoying the ceilidh (which is superb) and waiting on food. Food did come eventually but not together, oh no boys and girls, in wonderful drips and drabs, so much so that I was well finished before the last person actually got their meal. We also had several wrong plates but having waited so long people just ate what they were given, hey-ho I would have done the same. More plates then came later on after we had finished with the right meals and we were made to feel like it was our fault for eating the wrong stuff that was given to us. Anyway, trying not to be a 'Can-I-Speak-To-The-Manager' haircut kind of people we asked for the bill after our frivolities as we were to leave. Not only was nothing done to try and compensate for the a fact we had wrong and late food, but drinks were added on to our bill too. Once the errors were corrected we had Billy (oh yes he's back) come up to us with a card machine and wait for us to give him our money in cash. As both my parents and myself tried to inform Billy of our grievances, he gave us a look of what can only be described of a rather bored goldfish. Now I may only be a waitress of a humble little restaurant, but my experience of dealing with quite large tables is that you check and double check what everyone is having, make sure everything is ok, and if there are any problems you apologise and do what you can to make up for any mistakes. But Goldfish Billy wasn't having any of this, even when I pointed out that I came for an interview and know what it's like to work in a restaurant. He continued to be completely nonchalant and even said "that's not nice, I don't like that" when my dad pointed out that he had guests from England and Belarus. I don't know what Billy's issues are with England and Belarus but to me they're pretty alright countries. Anyways, I digress. Sure Avant Garde is a great place for drinks and ceilidh. I love shouting dance moves at people more than the next person. But perhaps they could learn how to actually deal with people. Just my humble opinion.

Sincerely,

A peculiar 22 year-old theatre student.
