Crooks! Do not hire a car from them.
The chap on reception said it was too dark to check the car. So took him at his word that it was ok.
Drove from the airport to Inverness and back again. Nobody in the rental booth, so left keys in the key-return box.
Happened to check my bank statement a month later and I was charged an extra £101. No letter, no email, no explanation. Phoned customer services who didn’t know what the charge was for. Said would get back to me in 15 days.
A month later, still no response...so I called again. CS said would look into.
Four days later I received an email saying there was a scratch on the wheel, (it was not caused by me, and the photo shows not evidence of a scratch)!
£35 for the repair, £66 for processing fee!

DO NOT RENT FROM THESE CROOKS.

Avis defrauded me, check reviews online to see other people scammed by this company. Beware when taking the vehicle back after renting, make sure the valet guys check the fuel level, and give you a receipt, if you do not wait for the receipt you may get scammed when they claim you put the car back with no fuel in it like they did with me...twice! Charged almost £300 after having a puncture too, they will fix the tyre for about £20. Beware.

The car was great, but we rang back to question some of their charges and we got condescending and extremely disrespectul attitude from the guy on the phone. He didnt answer our questions and refused to even be professional. Wouldnt rent through you guys again

Lovely customer service chap but shocking long wait. We're still waiting for our keys for the car, been here 40 minutes ago and no sign of progress. We're waiting for our class of car booked to be cleaned because they refuse to give us a car which is ready now which would be the right thing to do.

Hired a car as a combined package with BA last September. Arrived to hear the car was not quite ready, so asked to take a seat and get a coffee. Nearly 1 and 1/2 hours later we got the car. They did at least wave the second driver fee and apologise. Can't understand what the problem is there. Is wasn't particularly busy. Even the other car hire firm next door were slow. Never had to wait so long before, even at busy airports. I thought it was a one off problem, but my sister said she had the same experience a couple of years ago. What's up with them?

Absolutely shocking, 1 person working the desk, flight late so they knew exactly who they were expecting and when. We waited over an hour to collect a prebooked and prepaid car!
And when i asked whilst waiting in the queue if she could call for backup she tried to make me reel sorry for saying im here by myself all weekend. Awful AVOID and AVIS put on more staff!!

Very poor service. Was promised a car would be waiting for me by an employee called Sammy as I was coming up from Aberdeen (98mile trip) when I arrived between the time I said I'd be there James the other employee didn't know anything about it. There weren't any cars available. I was told to return the following day as there would be a car available which there wasn't. Sammy was on duty at the time and when I asked her about the car I was promised the day before she said she gave it to someone else. All this when she knew I was coming up from Aberdeen. If this is what they class as good service towards a long standing customer then I'm afraid I'm going to be renting my car from elsewhere in the future. She wasn't even apologetic about the whole thing which makes it even worse. Europe car next door may be a better option.

A brief warning to those people booking with AVIS through a partner (and encouragement to force an inspection when you return the car)

I have recently completed a holiday with an AVIS car. The car was great; the customer service? Horrific, in fact at points it felt like I was interrupting something really important @ the AVIS call center.

Two things to watch out for:
1) When booking through a partner, AVIS does not warn you of the “premium location fee” but it is part of the booking and not covered by the voucher provided by the partner. If you want to pick up the car, you have to accept it as the counter staff are not able to resolve this issue.
2) Make sure you ensure THEY inspect and sign of the car when you pick it up and drop it off. I was told to visually inspect the car before and after, which I did finding no damage. On return I asked for an inspection but the staff we too busy (again it felt like we were interrupting the AVIS team). Two weeks after the booked I received an additional charge for damage to the car. The only information about the damage is a single piece of paper signed by someone at the AVIS drop-off location… yes the same people who refused to inspect the car and confirm with me present that there was no damage. AVIS has offered not comfort (or even opened any discussion) about the process or about this incident.. in fact in their eyes it is not open for discussion as it is the evidence that has been provided. No photos of the damage, no description.

After numerous conversations with AVIS Customer Service that have gone no-where (other than them admitting the mistake of their counter staff but still leaving liability with me) and leave me still with this charge. On top of this my case has now been “closed” in Avis’s eyes and as such they have referred me to an industry body for escalation.

To everyone out there BEWARE of their customer service team and ensure you have THEM check the car over when you return it or you may find yourself.
