GDPR...
Following on from no doubt countless emails you will all have received from various companies this year, we are reminding you that we have an 'Opt-Out' policy here at Avondale Equine.
This ensures that we can aim to still try and help you with vaccination/dental reminders and also leaves you the choice to 'unsubscribe' from our emailed newsletters if you no longer feel they are relevant to you.
... So please, if you wish NOT to receive healthcare reminders, please let one of the team know to update your account settings.
Thanks!

***WARNING... WORM PICTURES (PUT YOUR DINNER DOWN IF SQUEAMISH...!)***
Autumn worming...
Now is the time to be considering your horse's tapeworm treatment. For busy yards we usually advise twice-yearly treatment with either praziquantel or double-dose of pyrantel. A single, low risk premises (e.g. private small yard) can often rely on once yearly treatment with these products.
... We now no longer have a praziquantel-only product in the UK, so combination wormers may have to be used. Bear in mind that early-mid October is too early to use moxidectin for encysted redworm (as most horse are still grazing pasture to some degree) so moxidectin:praziquantel products are not ideal at this time.
Tapeworm burdens can commonly cause spasmodic, recurrent colic symptoms so thoughtful treatment is advised.

Wonderful news for Cinders!

Now that Autumn is fully on the go, remember the risks of Atypical Myopathy.

If you have prescriptions to collect please be aware there are several roads blocked by fallen trees around Strathaven so please take care and if possible delay your journey until tomorrow.

***RUGS!!!***
Definitely a pet hate of the Vets here at the Practice. Every year the 'winter-rugging' season seems to start earlier by looking at the fields around Strathaven.
Clearly this is not actually the case and we are seeing year-on-year more over-rugging (and the problems it brings) than ever before.
... Have a look at the article below for more information...

''Gentle'' communication reminder...
We appreciate that there are several ways to contact us these days compared to just via phone, however, a few points to note...
1) Email - please use equine.avondalevets@gmail.com for ROUTINE enquiries. This is monitored during work hours and is one of the quickest way for your non-urgent enquiries to be dealt with.
... 2) Photos - when monitoring a case, the Vet's may ask for a photo update to be sent to the above email address. This is entirely at their discretion and not used as an alternative to a veterinary examination.
***Please do NOT send new wounds (which obviously need to be discussed and then likely examined by the Vet) to email or the Facebook page - this is not manned 24/7 and this will result in an avoidable delay to treatment for your horse. If a new wound is found then please call to discuss with a Vet (available 24/7) and then examination may be required.***
3) Facebook/other - please do not contact the team privately on facebook. They are allowed 'time-off' and we have a practice page where you can send non-urgent updates for their attention.
We know this is simply a reminder for the majority of you and is in line with other Veterinary Practices, but it doesn't hurt to clarify.
Thankyou.

***RAGWORT***
No excuses guys! With the recent rain, we are now seeing far too much of this on our travels out and about to calls.
Pulling this (from the root) to remove all leaves and flowers is so important. It may appear that your horse does not eat it and will just stick to the grass, but we know from liver biopsies this is simply not the case! Some horses can develop a taste for the leaves and these can be especially palatable when drying (e.g. after a hot sunny spel...l or when baled into hay).
This 'little and often' low grade exposure through life can lead to serious liver disease and failure in years to come. Often by the time this is detected on blood sampling, there is little we can do.
We know seeing others' fields strewn with this is frustrating and it certainly makes it harder to keep your adjacent land ragwort-free, so it is even more important to look after your own with frequent removal of this deadly weed.

Good luck today Laura! And we hope the rest of you are enjoying this beautiful weather out and about with your horses - long may it last!

*** Thanks to those clients who coped with slightly moved appointments today. It’s been a day of several genuine emergencies we needed to prioritise and attend to very quickly. We know you’d all want us to do the same if it was your horse but again, your patience is much appreciated.

User

Good reminder from Weipers as to why we strongly advise keeping your horse upto date with Tetanus vaccination.
