About Balgove Larder Steak Barn

The name says it all.

This former sawmill clings to its rustic past with walls of potato boxes and rough hewn communal tables made from wind blown beech from the estate; all cut and made on the farm by our resident joiner.

The menu: our own steaks, hung on site for no less than 28 days, burgers and sausages made here in our butchery, all cooked to order on our massive wood-fired BBQ. Add twice fried chips, or crispy beer battered onion rings, wine and local beer and enjoy.

In the Steak Barn we like to keep things casual. No bookings. Just turn up and we’ll take good care of you.

Come and join the party.

The Steak Barn is now bedded down for the the season - we'll re-open early March in the new year. Watch this space for firm dates.

Whilst scones and steaks are being enjoyed in The Café and The Steak Barn this afternoon, we have Andrew, behind the scenes, hand planting these summer/autumn leek seedlings...
Did you know that once harvested, our home-grown vegetables are available to buy in The Farm Shop and can also be enjoyed in our homemade dishes at both The Café and The Steak Barn?

We were celebrating my sons graduation and had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and the the service was great. The place was busy but we did not have to wait long for food and out table was cleared in a timely manner when finished. Nothing was a bother, staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. If I had to find fault I would say that when out meals were brought out we had to swap around a little as each of us liked our steaks cooked slightly different and it wasn’t clear which one was which but I think this is nit picking it wasn’t a hassle. All in all a delightful meal in a great environment, even my mother who always complains didn’t have a bad word to say, will definitely be back.

Well I have read some of the comments and I disagree with some but wasn't there on their days so....

all I can comment about was me and my wife's most enjoyable time there today the 4th of August 2018, we thoroughly enjoyed it and if it was closer to our home would be back frequently. My dearest had the rib eye steak and I the fillet steak both of which were cooked to our requests and were very very tasty, we passed on the starters but I wish I had some of those lovely ribs that I kept seeing go bye, waiting staff were very attentive and we thought final bill was reasonable for what we had all in most enjoyable and if back in the area will definatley be back

Thank you

Steaks were great in this quirky place & decent enough service. Only 4 stars as mushrooms tasted a bit watery, the bearnaise sauce a little too runny & the price was a tad expensive for the fact we had no wine with the meal. All in all a decent meal, with a little improvement it would have been superb. Defo would come back again.

User

Had a lovely evening but sadly that was mostly down to the good company and not the place. Granted, it has a great atmosphere and is a welcoming environment but after ordering, it took a full hour before our food appeared. As I vegetarian my expectations were not over-high so I was initially pleasantly surprised to find two options on the menu - but when all is said and done, the (pricy) 'Haloumi Burger' was actually a charred (bitter) slice of haloumi sandwiched between two slices of courgette and a slice of tomato. And the other option - a Portobello Mushroom burger was.... you guessed it .... a mushroom. So I was paying over £12 for, essentially, a modest portion of chips with a few veg and lettuce leaves. I am sure that for meat-eaters this place offers a good experience but I think they are taking the mickey out of the vegetarians (and there are quite a lot of us out there).

I understand they want to have simple, grill-able mains but if they can prepare delicious e.g. sausages for the meat-eaters surely it isn't beyond them to come up with e.g. a simple but delicious bean or lentil burger - just something worth paying for. Or at least, some decent salad options. Unless the menu changes I won't go again.
