Bare Knees Description

We are a family business, making kilts for all ages - from newborn to ninety nine and beyond. We can do alterations for adult kilts too. We use traditional kilt making skills to handsew our adult kilts, and the same skills in miniature for our baby kilts and child kilts. We work with other Scottish craftspeople to provide the best quality accessories to our customers.

Ex-hire outfits for sale - pick up a bargain for handmade kilts and jackets.
DM to buy any items, or you can email libby@bareknees.co.uk. Details of available products are listed under the pictures - kilts (4 tartans), jackets, shoes, sporrans and dresses.
Postage is dependant on number of items bought, but is roughly £4 for Recorded Delivery or £9 for Special Delivery. Email or DM for postage prices for out-with the UK.
... All kilts are handmade using 100% wool tartan. Unless otherwise stated, kilts are in a great conditon with plenty of wear still left in them. If they have more wear, that is mentioned, and reflected in the price. To measure for a kilt, pop a tape measure round the waist, just above the tummy button, and then measure from there to mid knee (making sure that the child doesn't look down as you do it, or the measurement will be shorter than required).
Jackets and waistcoats are all in great condition - you wouldn't know that the Charcoal Tweeds had been worn before. The Prince Charlies have a little more wear, but still in great second hand condition.
All other items (shoes/sporrans etc have been worn but with plenty of life still left in them). We have new socks available for £10, or ex-hire ones for £2, some wing collar shirts (£2-£10 depending on condition) and lots of ties for £3 - just let us know what you are looking for when you order.
If you wish to see photos of any specific items before ordering, please DM me with details of which items you would like to see. Happy Shopping!

It's been a while since we have posted, as most traffic goes through our website. Unfortunately, as it has been hacked, the website is currently suspended, and so we will be putting our sale items onto Facebook over the next week or so, if you are looking for any bargains with excellent quality ex-hire child outfits (and a few adult pieces).
Looking through old photos - this one from a photo shoot 6 years ago still makes me laugh - a good example of how much work it is to photograph children!

Remember to book your child and baby kilt hire in good time in the summer - some weeks are getting pretty full already for July and August, so email us (libby@bareknees.co.uk) early to book your slot.
Still only £50 for 1-10 year olds for shoes, socks, kilt, sporran, tie, jacket and waistcoat, or £30 for babies for kilt, socks and waistcoat or Jacobite shirt (plus postage for UK wide hires, if required).

A new tartan has been recorded in the Scottish Register of Tartans, called 'Astrobiology'. We know a few young space enthusiasts/Tim Peake fans who would love it. What do you think?
Here is the description - Designed for Charles Cockle, Professor of Astrobiology, Edinburgh University. Colours: the black background represents space; the blue squares represent oases of water on potentially habitable worlds, thought to be a necessity for life; green represents life - thin line...s tenuously threaded through the Universe and intersecting in water with three green lines representing planet Earth, the third planet from the Sun, the only planet currently known to support life; the red lines represent Mars, a planet at the edge of habitability; the yellow line represents our Sun, the only star at the current time known to support a life-bearing planet; the white line represents the colour of the distant stars as seen from the surface of any planet in the Universe - other planets that might support life.

Ooh and another called 'Mars Exploration'.
Here is the description - Designed on behalf of Charles Cockell, Professor of Astrobiology, Edinburgh University, this tartan is intended to be worn during Mars science, exploration and outreach activities. Colours: the red background depicts the surface of Mars, the Red Planet; blue depicts the water-rich past of Mars and the presence of water, mainly as ice, on the planet today; the four green lines represent Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, the presence of habitable conditions on the planet and the possible future presence of life in the form of human settlement; the thick white line represents the Martian poles, visible from the Earth, a conspicuous and important feature of the planet and its long-term climatic cycles.

We love recycling at Bare Knees, and what better way to recycle your wedding plaid than to turn it into a baby kilt, with bow tie and flashes. (Makes it a little cheaper too as you are supplying the material!) Contact libby@bareknees.co.uk for more information.

All set up and ready to go at the The Glasgow Girls Wedding Guide band showcase. Come along at 7pm to the Lighthouse - free entry and a glass of bubbly on arrival, then lots of great bands and exhibitors to meet.
