When we're quiet on FaceBook you know we're really busy!
We are extremely proud to say we have another worldwide first and have cracked 300WHP on the Mazda MX-5 / Miata ND!!!
Stage 2 developments are going extremely well, we envisage releasing our stage 2 conversion shortly with 310BHP and a flat torque curve (to be as kind to other components) as shown. Throwing caution to the wind we decided to crank the boost up (engine perfectly safe) and have exceeded 300WHP, 340BHP!
... All of this is with the BBR Stage One turbo conversion, huge power capabilities!

My Stage 1 Turbo conversion, Fitted last week to my NC3.5, along with the Koni lowering package is ready for a quick review!

We are accustomed to the high standards of workmanship regularly described by previous BBR customers so it was no surprise to see a good looking installation under the bonnet of my car.

Nice also to see that the time and trouble was taken to clean and polish the exterior prior to handover.

The car looked so much better on it's new suspension. The stance is perfect and the 17" Alloys fill the arches perfectly.

Neil gave good advice re the fuelling, handling and maintenance recommended and then I took my paperwork and set off on the 50 mile trip home.

Having driven mainly turbo diesels I expected the behaviour to be broadly similar ie, fairly flat to begin with and then a fairly rapid wallop of torque and acceleration.

Instead, the car drives pretty much as before up to 2000rpm but from there, the torque builds steadily, progressively and consistently until it reaches its peak of 203lb/ft around 4000rpm and then slowly decreases.

You can see from the graph that the bhp climbs steadily right through to the peak of 234bhp and that is exactly how it feels on the road. There is no sudden power surge and hence no drama. You can accelerate out of wet roundabouts without the need to be on high opposite lock alert!

The only possible downside of this is that it may not feel as immediately wild and exciting as you may expect, but, whilst this may be your first impression, you are soon relishing the driveability and effortlessness of the car.

Overtaking is now efficient and safe with a 40-70mph time in third of around 4.5 seconds compared to around 8 seconds before the mod.

60-80mph in 3rd is very strong indeed and makes for great A-road progress!

Remember this is a 1.8! All you lucky folk with 2.0L MX5s can just expect a whole lot more.

As startling a change as the Turbo conversion is, it is probably the suspension mod that has changed the way the car drives the most. The change, for me, is astonishing. I was happy enough with the unmodified car and forgave its occasionally bouncy moments as it returned good ride comfort. It rolled a bit and the steering was a bit light at speed.

The car is very different now. Solid and competent with a meatiness in the steering feel. The car corners very flat and has lost the need to be 'loaded' into a corner. Steering is precise and only now do I fully understand the 'cornering as if on rails' feeling.

The ride is a little firmer but is compliant and drew no negative comments from the wife!! I've been over 20 or so speed humps and have not scraped one yet. I am taking good care over them and it's paid off so far!

If someone had said that I could only have one mod, either the Turbo OR the suspension, then I would have to go for the suspension. In normal driving you don't or can't use what the Turbo can deliver all that often (if you value your licence) but you appreciate the suspension ALL the time.

I would class the Koni suspension mod as essential for all MX5s. The fact that it also makes the car look fantastic is a bonus!

Yes, the Turbo conversion is expensive but if you can afford and justify it, it's a fabulous enhancement.

In a few years, I will hopefully migrate to a late NC2.0L and would most definitely aim for a stage 2 Turbo - (with the Koni mod of course!)

Thanks all at BBR!

Just picked up my stage 1 turbo for ND plus suspension and brakes upgrade and new Oz wheels. Look of the car is totally transformed with the wider wheels and lower suspension, as is the handling. And Wow does it go. The car is totally transformed from an excellent car to a brilliant car! The mid range performance is quick, very quick and there is not much that will see you off the lights. The experience with Neil and team has been professional from start to finish. When I visited for a test drive he kindly took my 14 year only son out as well which made his day! Just a bit of good old fashioned customer service goes a long way in my book. I have never had a car modified. Would highly recommend the team at BBR. Thank you

User

Just picked up my MX-5 after a stage one turbo conversion, Exedy clutch, BBR/Koni suspension package, Sparco wheels with F1 tyres and EBC brake package. The car is truly amazing, the power is phenomenal, delivered smoothly across the revs, and it handles like it's on rails. It looks great too with its new wheels and lowered suspension. The memory of the 4 litre BMW trying to lose us (and failing miserably) when Neil picked me up in it will last a long time.

Dealing with BBR has been an absolute pleasure from the first phone call, numerous more conversations and several emails (sorry, Neil!) up to collecting my car a month later. This is a company that understands its customers and goes way beyond the extra mile to create a special experience for them. Feel free to contact me if you are thinking about taking your car to BBR.

User

It's been two weeks now since I collected my Mk 3 from Neil after having had a Stage 2 Turbo installed. What a rocket!!! Also had Ohlin coilovers fitted along with the (quieter) GT backbox. I'm really delighted with the quality of the work and with the difference it's made to my little motor. It flies!! A sincere "thank you" to Neil and all of his team at BBR. Oh - and good luck with the move and the "other" big day coming up Neil.

User

In August this year I travelled to the UK from Guernsey in the Channel Islands to purchase a 2008 Mazda 3 MPS. Before heading back home I booked myself in at BBR for a StarChip ECU remap upgrade. The service was first class from guys, they even took the time to look into at a small issue with the car which took a couple of hours with no extra cost !. I am very happy with the upgrade, although I am sure I will be heading back in the near future.

User

I've owned an MX5 Mk3.5 for over 4 years now and spent more than it's worth on modifications from cosmetic lowering to Turbo Charging, the last year has been a revelation with BBR products, they don't just fit someone else's parts they actually design a lot in house so that they are R&D and tested specifically for the MX5. I've also being impressed and witnessed at first hand their mechanical attention to detail, the car has been in their garage numerous times and has always been returned with every part fitted correctly, no back box hanging by just two hangers like I've had on one occassion elsewhere.

I've just now completed around 500 miles on the BBR designed progressive spring/ revalved Koni adjustable damper combination. I must point out that this car is a road car and as such any suspension choice has to be a compromise to cope with the variety of road surfaces, this suspension has brought the smile back to my face when driving this car, the compliance and increase in available suspension travel brings a degree of comfort that did not exist on my previous height and damper rate adjustable coilovers. I believe there's not a lot of rear suspension travel available on the MX5 NC normally and I was finding with my previous set up that the rear was losing traction accelerating on undulating surfaces possibly because it had been reduced even further.

The plus side despite the increase in comfort I have not noticed any loss in handling over my previous setup, the ride is still on the firm side with none of the under damped bouncing and crashing which I suffered with my first suspension modification ,the lowering coil/Bilstein combination. The car remains level throughout hard braking and acceleration and indeed with the renewed confidence in the rear of car's ability to remain in contact with the road surface I'm actually driving that bit harder. So well done BBR worth every penny in my humble opinion.

User

I trusted Neil and BBR's reputation implicitly and bought a 6 year old BBR Stage 2 fitted (300+bhp) - MK 3.5 (PRHT) NC - unseen and untested.

Initial issue with coolant pipes not being tight enough and leaking, but once resolved by a local garage, (due to distance back to BBR) the car operates and runs perfectly.

There is no turbo 'kick' just a progressive endless power wich takes you to very fast - very quickly. People mention back-end slide, but I've not experianced any of it. Just point and shoot. The car now has been undersealed and complimentary bits of chrome, the local MX5 owners crew are jealous, work mates too frightened to get in lol...

The car makes great snap, crackle and pops sound if you like that sort of thing.. Its a real 'sleeper' looks inconspicuous, but will keep up with most £50- 70k sports cars well past 100mph very easily. Now considering asking Neil to go up to Stage 3 or 400bhp just for fun - but seriously!! BBR would I recommend them - DEFINATELY YES...

User

I took my MX5 ND in for 4 wheel alignment and geometry last week after fitting 15mm wheel spacers I wanted to check everything was OK. Neil set the alignment and geometry and adjusted the caster angle slightly. What a difference! The car feels really good, turn in is sharp, very stable in a straight line and what really surprised me was the improvement in front suspension. I've got eibach Pro springs which were fitted at Mazda dealership and prior to this set up even at modest speed pot holes and speed ramps could be pretty harsh. That's all changed now and I really wasn't expecting that. Well worth getting this done. I'll be back in the New Year to try out the Super 200 and Turbo conversion. I didn't think the handling could get much better but given what a difference the alignment made I might even consider the full koni/spring set up and take things up another notch.

User

I had the Super 180 conversion completed on my MK3 2l sport (just the manifold and remap as unfortunately can't have a louder exhaust where I live).

Having completed 700 miles since then my observations are as follows -

1. Car is much keener to keep moving forward as if it wants to accelerate after changing gear rather than 'dipping / pausing' for a moment, it's difficult to explain - you have to feel it for yourself.

2. The torque difference is very noticeable and peak torque lower down the rev range. I did not really expect such an improvement with only a slight modification.

3. There is definitely an improvement to the sound compared to the muted stock exhaust. It now has a deeper note emitting from the system which I did not expect. I can only assume it is because the airflow has improved and because of the material (stainless steel) used for the manifold.

4. Relating to point 1 above you have to keep a close check on the revs more because it accelerates so freely / briskly and would be very easy to go well into the red zone; It just wants to keep building up and up. Obviously depends how you want to drive the car but personally I never red line my cars and of course the limit has been increased with the conversion; On the rolling road it achieved around 187 bop.

5. If for any reason fuel economy is a consideration I can give the following observations after having run two tanks full of super unleaded through it. With day to day town driving, going to and from work which is only 3 miles (and only warms up a short while before I stop) I am achieving 29mpg which is much the same as before. However when I did a mixed drive of around 150 miles cross country 150 miles on the motorway I achieved 38mpg! This did surprise me as I was using 3rd and 4th a lot through the countryside so I expected it to be a lot less. I have only used BP Ultimate for the two tanks to try and give a totally fair comparison of mpg I may try an alternative brand but do not imagine it would make any difference (am always open to suggestions / advice from other people).

6. Regarding the standard of work and people at BBR, they have done a superb job and are extremely helpful (plus Neil’s dog is so cute in reception area).

My car has 110,000 miles on it and this has significantly improved the driving experience. In fact I would not want to drive a

standard one ever again.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending anyone getting a BBR conversion and I actually work in Motorsport myself.

User

I had the BBR200 conversion with brakes, suspension & exhaust on my mk3 and loved it so much so that 3 months later I px the car in for mk3.5 with stage 2 hybrid turbo conversion. I have pre-ordered the new RF and it will go straight to BBR to perform their magic :-)

User

Had the stage II installed on my 1.8 2010 NC last week.We ended up with 305nm and 280hp .The power range is incredibly linear and is mind blowing. This was worth every penny spent. No doubt my car will be the envy of many a Dutch MX5 owner

User

Had the Super 190 and Springs fitted to my 2017 ND RF over the weekend. Very happy with the results; car picks up earlier and pulls harder in every gear. I used to shift around 6k as it was effectively pointless to use the last 800rpm, now the car pulls all the way to 7k. I wanted the springs mainly for looks, as I found the stock car sits too high, however they are a big improvement. The ride is still great, but turn in is sharper and the car is just planted throughout the corner. Just a recommendation for BBR, I would add a recommendation to your website to turn up with 98-99 octane, this has bearing on your final numbers i.e HP.

Will probably be back for the hot cams to complete my NA mods.

User

Had the Super 185 Grand Tourer fitted to our MX5, the journey home took a lot longer as we had to take the long way back just for the fun of it! Didn't want it hand the keys to my wife, even though it is her car!

User

Had a turbo kit fitted to my Mx5 2.5 VVT sport just before Christmas by Neil and the BBR team, and have to say what a great job they did for me, all i can say is woohoo, the car is superb the power and torque is fantastic but it still has that around town driveability which I wanted to keep as my car is a daily drive.

Another thing which i also like is the Turbo kit looks stock (the black pipe work etc matches the rest of the engine bay). I was originally going to keep the car naturally aspirated and get BBR to add high lift cams, exhaust ect but Neil advised me to go the Turbo route and I'm so happy that I took his advice.

I love the fun and smiles this car gives me. Thanks BBR.

User

Another top job big thanks to Neil at BBR THATS MY 4th car that I've took to BBR in 10 years!

From my Cosworth to a Tdi Golf, a Evo 6, Mk5 Golf GTI and now my mk5 GTI edition 30, all work and aftercare has always been top notch and the results always leave me smiling!

Many friends learnt the hard way taking their cars to non skilled people claiming high power from their laptop working in a garage from home! It always ends in tears!

If you want a proper job, proper aftercare and someone who knows what their talking about Neil at BBR is you man. Thanks again.

User

All the way from Singapore, installed the BBR 200 on my NC and this is how the car should be from the start. Pulls strong all the way to the redline. Keep looking for excuses to go for a drive now

Now waiting for the BBR 225 conversion when it is available.

User

It has been a few years since I had BBR stage 2 fitted to my car. Love it, the car drives like a go cart, love the kit.

User

Well I have been using my MX5 NC this last few weeks after BBR GTI fitted their superb Super 200 kit. All I can say is that I am well impressed. The car is so much more responsive and gives a lovely little growl even with the standard back box. Great work chaps.

User

Thanks a lot to all team BBRgti ! The Mx-5 ND with kit turbo stage 1 ... fly and enjoy me !!

User

User

Had the stage II installed on my 1.8 2010 NC last week.We ended up with 305nm and 280hp .The power range is incredibly linear and is mind blowing. This was worth every penny spent. No doubt my car will be the envy of many a Dutch MX5 owner
