13 April 2019: The sunset marches ever inexorably north. The silhouette is Aird Dalbeg, sometimes known as Lion Rock - you can just pick out the shape of the lion's head watching imperiously over the North Atlantic. Climbers were on this rock earlier in the day, sheltered from the strong south-easterly.
The fine weather continues - it seems we're in for another week of it! And the stunning sunsets continue as well.
This evening, this spectacular sunset was accompanied at its finale by a blue flash. This is a rare and fleeting spectacle caused by the refraction of sunlight when the light travels through more of the Earth's atmosphere. It occurs just as the disc of the sun disappears below the horizon and is generally best seen over the ocean where more of the atmosphere is visible and the line of sight is virtually parallel to the horizon. The atmosphere bends the sunlight passing thro...ugh it, separating the light into its different colours. The flash is more commonly green as blue and violet light are more readily scattered by the atmosphere. The flash is blue only when the air is especially clear so that sufficient blue or violet light gets through. It's all over in a second - you daren't blink for fear of missing it. On the occasions where there is no cloud on the horizon, we always watch out of the blue (or green) flash but this is only the second time we've seen it in the 18 months we've lived in Dalbeg.
