Bhf Centre Of Research Excellence Glasgow

About Bhf Centre Of Research Excellence Glasgow

BHF Centre of Excellence Glasgow puts leading scientists together who conduct ground-breaking research projects with the aim of conquering heart disease.

Bhf Centre Of Research Excellence Glasgow Description

The rationale behind the BHF Centre of Research Excellence in Vascular Science and Biology in Glasgow is as follows:

Chronic diseases challenging our society e. g. heart failure; stroke, vascular dementia and coronary artery disease (CAD) are linked to a common factor, namely vascular dysfunction. The impact of diseases associated with aberrant vascular function is enormous, affecting >20 million individuals in the UK. This will grow as our population ages and as the prevalence of conditions causing vascular damage (obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, hypertension (HT)) increases. Hence there is an urgent need to better understand the biology of the vasculature in health and disease.

Considering the scientific strengths and strategic priority related to vascular research in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, we believe that Glasgow is well positioned to lead the way in unravelling the vascular (patho)biology in health and disease. The Award of Excellence provides opportunities to bring together outstanding researchers across multiple disciplines in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences including immunology, inflammation, signalling, cell biology and cardiovascular science and medicine, to study vascular dysfunction as a root cause of chronic cardiovascular disease.

We have 2 opportunities for Clinical Research Fellows to undertake a 3 year PhD funded by the BHF Research Excellence Award in Cardiovascular Science & Medicine.
The PhD will focus on research related to mechanistic and translational research into vascular and cardiovascular conditions of clinical relevance. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with outstanding researchers in vascular biology and associated conditions. A detailed programme of work will ...be developed together with the future supervisors.
As a Clinical Research Fellow (CRF), your new role will allow the development of research skills and production of data which the CRF may use to compete for external funding. Although research will form the major component of this post, participation in associated clinical duties and a small amount of teaching will be incorporated into the job plan.
Informal enquiries may be made to: Professor Rhian Touyz, email address: Rhian.Touyz@glasgow.ac.uk
