Biosafety Training Institute (Bti) Description

The Biosafety Training Institute (BTI) currently offers two courses: Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 and the Professional Course in Biorisk Management.

The Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 course (based on UK legislation) has been validated by The University of Edinburgh as SCQF Level 11 (the equivalent standard to a module on a MSc (Master of Science postgraduate course)), and is accredited by the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research (ISTR). The Professional Course in Biorisk Management (based on WHO guidance /CEN workshop agreement ) is suitable for the international market, providing an excellent grounding in biosafety and biosecurity. Successful completion results in delegates obtaining a Certificate in Biorisk Management from The University of Edinburgh (validated at the equivalent standard to a module on a Master of Science (MSc) postgraduate course. This course also provides education and training for individuals who wish to demonstrate their competency via the IFBA's Professional Certification scheme (see below). Tutoring input for the BTI is supplied by expert and experienced professionals from the University of Edinburgh, under the direction of the University's corporate Health and Safety department.

The academic objective of the BTI is to formulate and deliver high quality biosafety training provision to match the world renowned reputation of the University of Edinburgh for research and teaching in the biological and biomedical sciences. Since May 2011, the BTI has been developed as a Centre of Excellence, utilising our own in-house course materials, to ensure that teaching is to the standard required by the University.

The BTI became an Observer Organisation to the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA) in 2016. The BTI is currently exploring joint opportunities with the IFBA, through the provision of education and training to help prove competence, in relation to their scheme for Professional Certification (PC) in Biorisk Management.
