Blaize Rattery Description

Blaize Rattery and Rescue is a small non-profitable hobby business run by Emily, based in Romsey, Hampshire, UK.
Originally founded as a Rescue for unwanted rodents (of all species) to find them good loving homes. Eventually meeting several registered breeders, lead us into breeding.

Our aim as a rattery is to produce well tempered, people-orientated and rat-social rats suitable as companions for people of all ages (including children). Our ideal long term) (goal would be to produce consistent rats for the use of emotional or mental therapy /support.

Our rats: We like to promote and encourage good health in our kittens by selectively breeding parents that show no heritable health issues, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle full of stimulation and enrichment before the kittens leave for their new loving homes for life.

We handle our baby's from day one to promote confidence and trust towards humans. We also like to introduce our kittens to other well-tempered rats of various ages (that aren't the parents) to encourage social-learning, social interactions and general well being.

Our breeding rats are from our own lines or obtained from other UK reputable /registered breeders. We keep any rats that have been bred from or used for breeding, even into retirement. We are reluctant to put any rat down, regardless to age, unless its ethically necessary.

Varieties: We don't specifically breed for a variety (appearance) of rat, as its the temperament and health of the rats that is prioritised to us when selectively breeding. But we typically produce:
(markings) Berkshire, hooded, stripped roan and Berkshire roan.
(ear type) top ear and dumbo.
(fur type) smooth coat and rex.
(colour) agouti (brown), black, Russian blue, Russian silver, Dilute blue, Russian agouti and Dilute agouti.
We have also (rarely /unintentionally) produced; naked, champagne, silver fawn, fawn, mink, Russian mink, dove /Russian dove, platium, pink eye white, albion, Himalayan and Siamese.

About Emily:
Emily has owned various species of rodents consistently for over 20 years, (along with rabbits and a family dog), she has a strong passion and interest in them all, driving her curiosity to learn more and improve for the animals she loves. Now she is a (BSc Hons, 1: 2) qualified Animal Behaviourist, and a (level 2) veterinary nurse, specialising in rodents, obtained from Sparsholt College (partnered with Portsmouth University). Focusing a lot of her work and studies around rattus norvegicus, has even lead her to presenting practical lessons at public schools around small animal management and handling.

Emily does suffer with mental health difficulties, but her pet rats play a significant role in her mental wellness. Though she does struggle socially, she gets great satisfaction helping other people and providing people with amazing companions.

Money from sold rats goes directly back towards the upkeep of other rats in our care. We occasionally do charitable events, whereby some money from each rat will go directly to the charity as stated on the relevant post. Money from any educational based service from Blaize Rattery and Rescue only pays for Emily’s time or resources used.
