Next generation getting the way of handling the boat checking lines earlier in summer.

I guess this photo says so much about mussel farming: location, nature, environment, teamwork, friendly rivalry, and hard work.

Few new photos of mussel farming in Shetland curtesy of Rory Dalzail

Noticed today’s headline is that someone has tested hepatitis e in mussels and an oyster.
Pretty surprising news as our mussels are grown far from centres of population in remote locations in Scotland and in A grade designated shellfish growing waters. I guess all it takes is for someone somewhere in the food chain to sneeze with all the winter colds and there may be residues of virus on our food as it is on every thing else that we eat. What the article doe...sn’t say is that when mussels like other foods are cooked that any such viruses are killed and they are absolutely safe to eat. Sadly today there are a number of research institutes that exist on public funding and feed sensational headlines that damage local businesses working throughout fragile rural economies which create sustainable jobs.
Pity that such institutes and headline creators wouldn’t create positive news on how good shellfish is for you.
Enjoy our mussels they are safe and good for you

2 Sister boats (except for hull design) built by Nobles of Girvan finally meet after 13 or so years. What do you think is the best? The monohull or the catamaran?

This is a video from John who along with Rory took the Replenish home to Shetland: Caption has to be ‘Rock and Roll!’

Some lovely photos of one of our boats working in Olnafirth with the superb January weather. Taken by Ellis Nicolson from EMN plant

Wow, this isn’t a wind up, Lindsay has just let me know that our new boat was originally launched by HRH Princess Anne in 2004, what an honour.

Pretty pleased this weekend to get home the latest addition to our workboat fleet, after a 4 month refit at Macduff Shipyards (Buckie) and looking fairly smart in our company livery. Originally built as the Gizzen Briggs by Nobles shipyard, she is now renamed Replenish, due to the fact her main role will be preparing and filling up empty Mussel lines with reseeded stocks. Many thanks to John and Rory for coming in on their week off to take the boat North to Brae. They were pretty impressed that she handled really well on the trip North.

Lovely morning today, with some excellent pictures taken by Darren as the Steadfast prepped for harvesting seed mussels. Something about red sky in morning ? .......

Wishing all friends and customers a happy new year for 2018, some recent photos from our boatmen and a good one taken of the Triona at Olnafirth by Marvin Hutchison thanks Marvin

Last Monday had a spectacular showing of orcas just off our shore base, amazing creatures, pretty exhilarating seeing them in the wild compared with a theme park. Think they were feeding on a seal, saw one of them rolling on her back with a seal type object showing from its jaws. Sadly we haven't seen our friendly seal that always comes to our shore base keeping an eye on us and feeding on the small fish that habitat our base. Hope she has just moved on to pastures new having had a fright. So much better in the wild than Sea World.
