It's fascinating how we can link so many things back to our childhood experiences.
Studies have shown that the more adverse experiences we have as a child can increase our risk of having health and wellness issues in adulthood.

Chronic Stress and Pain...
"Stress can contribute to nerve sensitivity or pain system sensitivity. Stress lives in the brain, and therefore the experience of people with chronic pain often is that their pain increases as they become more stressed” Dr. Lorimor Moseley, PT, PhD.
Cortisol, also known as the “stress hormone”, is an important neuroendocrine hormone that is released in response to stressful situations (Lucchetti et al, 2012). Cortisol is a powerful anti-inflammator...y that mobilises glucose stores for energy and regulates inflammation (Hannibal and Bishop, 2014). A pain-induced stress response is provoked by an increased perception of pain as damaging or threatening and often results in fear and avoidance of pain-provoking actions (Lumley et al, 2011). Ultimately, resulting in an exaggerated or prolonged stress response leading to widespread inflammation and chronic pain (Lumley et al, 2011).
Stressful events are unavoidable in daily life, and successfully navigating these obstacles is essential to success. Although living and working in a stresser free world may be highly desirable but ultimately unrealistic, humans have the ability to control what they perceive as stressful and how they react to it (Hannibal and Bishop, 2014). In order for us to mitigate these exaggerated and prolonged episodes of pain, it is imperative that we try to manage it to the best of our abilities. The controlling of stress can be reduced to our ability to modify what we perceive as stress and how we adapt to it. Research shows that cognitive appraisals, or exposure to stressors may lower the secretion of this stress hormone and prevent chronic, recurrent pain (Hannibal and Bishop, 2014). Additionally, education into the influence of non-pain-related stress throughout the pain episode may help patients to manage non-pain-related stressors, thereby facilitating pain rehabilitation (Hannibal & Bishop, 2014).
Our Stress Managament treatment aims to not only help you with your stress in the now but teach you some tools you can take away like meditation or visualisations to better deal with stress day to day. If you feel stress is taking over your life a bit and starting to present itself in the physical sense through headaches for example then please get in touch and we can discuss how our Stress Management treatment could help.

Piriformis syndrome is a painful condition that occurs when the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve as it passes in close proximation. Despite also commonly being referred to as wallet syndrome, piriformis syndrome is six times more prevalent in females than males. The piriformis is a flat triangular-shaped muscle located deep in the buttocks close to the hip joint that connects the sacrum to the top of the thigh bone. It's primary function is to lift and rotate the... thigh away from the center of the body, allowing us to walk by controlling the weight transfer from one foot to the other, while also maintaining balance. The piriformis is required during all motions that require lifting and rotating the thighs — the vast majority of hip and leg movements[1].
Causes and symptoms of this syndrome:
Typically, long periods of sitting, overuse and activities such as rowing in a seated position can irritate, inflame and tighten the piriformis, subsequently causing sciatic symptoms
The main symptoms associated with this issue are:
- Tenderness or pain in the buttocks. Pain can refer down the back of the leg into the hamstring muscles and, infrequently, the calf muscles. Localised tenderness of palpation of the piriformis is present up to 92% of the time [2]. - Tingling and/or numbness in the lower leg - Tenderness when pressure is applied on the piriformis muscle, such as with sitting or going over a speed bump in a car. - Low-back pain and/or tenderness.
The piriformis syndrome's symptoms are very similar to those of sciatica, and both can be present at the same time making it difficult to decipher the symptoms for each one. However, in both cases, conservative treatment, including medication and Physiotherapy, is usually helpful for the majority of patients.
