Birkhill Signal Box Appeal
Birkhill is a little station in the countryside, evoking the atmosphere of a typical Caledonian Railway crossing place on a single track branch line. But there is an essential element missing at the moment - a signal box. Some signal posts have been erected at either end of the station, but the signal box is vital to house the lever frame and instruments which make it all work and to allow two trains to pass each other. This appeal is aimed at rai...sing the necessary funds to build a brick and timber re-construction of a typical Caledonian Railway Northern division signal box. A foundation was put in many years ago and this will be used as planned. The artist’s impression below gives a good idea of how the signal box, based on the design of Inchture, will look in it's location at Birkhill. The project will cost an estimated £60,000. Please support this project and help to get Birkhill functioning as originally intended. To make an online donation click here https://mydonate.bt.com/events/birkhillsb /478518

Went for afternoon tea with my husband on train and spent all day looking at Museum,Model Railway and Classic cars that were a special feature of the day.

It was a brilliant day out and well worth the money.Would definately recommend it.

User

Turned up not expecting much. Intention was to go on one train, go round the museum then find something else to do for the rest of the day. Rode three of the four trains running that day, the museum was excellent and we spent the whole day there. Staff were professional, knowlegable and friendly. As another reviewer said, the South Devon lines are more scenic, but this was a lovely ride with good views. Couldn't get my two boys to leave, the wife enjoyed the day too. Highlight of the day for me, a ride on the Swindon built 126 DMU.

User

Thank you to all the staff on the Santa train experience, from start to finish each and ever staff member with a smile and the number one priority were the kids. We experienced all exhibits including cafe and shop. If asked I think the staff would undertake all request without hesitation. From a 3,6 and 48 year old Thank You.

User

Spent the day here with my wife, 2yr old son and another family with Thomas and friends :) had an absolutely fantastic day. Lots of stuff to do for the kids and some informative stuff for the adults but to see the kids enjoy it so much is what it’s all about. Staff and attendants were great, from parking on arrival to leaving at end of the day can’t think of a single complaint. Great fun and well worth the cost, travel and time.......definitely be back sometime 👍🏻🚂

User

Perfect birthday trip for our little train fan! Volunteer railway men were great and enjoyed having a natter with them. A lovely man on the footplate of one of the trains you could get on was delightful and our little one was made up to be able to "drive" the train ÔøΩ

We took a trip on one of the trains and it was like a step back in time. Nice touch that the ticket office gave our son his "first train ticket" which I am sure will be treasured!

Nice bite to eat in the cafe and wander round the museum which he loved so much he squealed with delight!

Will be back at Christmas ÔøΩ

User

Lots of fun, Shame they stopped serving bacon rolls at 1140am as I’m sure a panini more hard work. The train staff weee friendly staff and the museum gent was great to my friends little boy and obviously very passionate which was great. Lovely day out thanks

User

First time with our grandkids yesterday and we were blown away. Great fun - superb staff and great inclusive activities for the kids - they loved the hunt for the missing soft toys in the museum! And we saw Tomas being spruced up for this weekend fun! Well done every one ÔøΩÔøΩÔøΩ

Cracking day out, visited yesterday which was second visit in last 2 months, brought my 5 year old Son who has Autism and he absolutely loves the place, staff very helpful and couldn't do enough for us, little fella loved the steam train, the Museum and Model Railway, first thing my Son said when we got home yesterday was "Going Train Museum nxt week" bought a Annual ticket so we will be back again before it closes for the Winter and already looking forward to visiting throughout nxt year

User

Brought some tenants from our sheltered housing for the afternoon tea. From start to finishing the visit was great. Museum was very interesting and very child friendly. Great wee cafe and gift shop. Lovely trip on the trainwith a scrumptious afternoon tea. Very high quality, plentiful and so fresh. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the young lady on the train that did the tea and ccoffe she couldnt do enough for us. Would highly recommend

User

Braw day out for young an auld alike quite possibly the cheapest day out excellent value museum entry and unlimited travel for £12 ok not as picturesque as the Devon lines but so much to do sort mail on the mail train , literally change the points on a section of track in the shed various engines to climb into and try out the controls or watch enthusiasts restoring engines and carriages . Im not a train buff or spotter but a day is not long enough to take it all in will definately go back

User

Booked the afternoon tea for our mum - had a lovely wee afternoon - journey was very relaxing as we enjoyed all the goodies. Train is lovely - very old fashioned and it's like a step back in time. Staff are amazing, very friendly and made the day extra special - they even posed for pics with mum. Will definitely recommend.

User

A great day out at a very reasonable cost. Plenty to do and staff very friendly. Would highly recommend and definitely be back next year with our Grandson who loves trains.

User

We were at the Thomas day yesterday was wet and very busy but had a fantastic day staff and volunteers were extremely helpful and friendly

User

We took our grandson yesterday and he loved it! He was a bit confused that Thomas didn’t answer him, but that’s TV ‘s fault!!! We had a picnic in the sunshine and he loved the slide and roundabout! The staff are so helpful and friendly, from the car park to the grounds and engines, and it is totally focused on the children having a good time.

Would have been 5 but I stupidly sat on a sleeper and covered my jumper and jeans with tar. My fault but maybe a wee notice?

We’ll be back again definitely!

User

Was a gret day out with the kids and very informative. My 3 yr old love every minute as he is mad about trains

Would have been a 5 star but there was no access across the platform for disabled or prams to get to the museum (no fault of there own. It was waterlogged and for everyone’s safety was shut only way across was to go over the bridge with loads of stairs)

User

A really great day out with the kids. Staff were enthusiastic and very helpful. There was plenty of space on the early train and the museum kept us occupied for a while after that. The model railway wasn’t open when we went so no fifth star, but other than that I wouldn’t fault it.

User

We took our 2 kids on the Santa express yesterday a great atmosphere, Santa's helpers were great all very enthusiastic and friendly. We were in carriage A and as I watched Santa coming along the carriage he asked each child what they wanted, if they had written their list and if they had been good. He then sat next to the kids for photos.Unfortunately, being last in the carriage my kids got asked their name and age and got given their presents and off he went as we had reached the stop! No chat to Santa and No photographic memories. My son (4) got a lovely book but my daughters (5) present was a total disappointment. She got a foam 'craft it yourself' train.

User

This is very well organised event, and it was really busy when we went yesterday. I was disappointed to discover that my tickets for “Carraige A” were, in fact, no use to me whatsoever; nor was the fact that we had arrived an hour before our departure time. When it came time to board the train, we joined a short queue for the carraige, only to discover that all seats were “taken” when we got on. When I say “taken”, I mean one couple were taking up four seats by putting their coats and bags down beside themselves and one other lady (sitting on her own) was taking up four seats herself and telling everyone (like us) “sorry I am keeping them for someone”. There was me thinking I thought that was why we had stood in a queue. Anyway, I asked the conductor chap where we were to sit, as the young man I was supporting is severely autistic and it would not be appropriate or safe for us to sit in separate seats (could the lady keeping three empty seats not have been asked to seat her absent family to sit separately?). So, we were sent to Carraige E, being told, this is our overflow Carraige, and it turned out also to have compartments for six people in single seats. We shared our compartment with two gents and two children, both of whom were very well behaved, thankfully. In the future, I will not attend any such event unless there are numbered seats or designated quiet areas for children and young people with autism. It was the one disappointing aspect of an otherwise good day out.

User

On arrival it looked great and as if it was going to be an amazing day but there could have been more at each end as there was not much to do when you came off the train and waited an hour. I understand the whole experience was about Thomas The Tank Engine but children get easily fed up
