Historical context and social history can add a lot to #familyhistory research. In this month's post Rosemary Dixon-Smith @dixiemole, imagines herself in her ancestor's position as he listened to tales of 16th century battles and raids in #Northumberland and sets off to dig deeper. The conflict of choice is the Redeswire Raid of 7th July 1575, which is remembered annually at the longest ride out of the year, and a high point of the Jethart Callant's Festival. The annual Civic Weeks, Festivals and Rideouts celebrate the #heritage and customs that make us both unique yet bring us together. #ScottishBorders #Northumberland https://www.bordersancestry.co.uk/…/red eswire-the-smiths-at…

Like many folks I have relatives that have emigrated to the far flung corners of the globe, but until now, have barely given those that went to #Canada a second thought. Casually flicking through the Dictionary of Canadian Biography by places rather than people, brought up some familiar surnames. The resulting research following the 'I wonder' revealed a few surprises, not only about my own extended #familyhistory but connections to other families from #Alnwick, #Berwick and the #ScottishBorders.

Arrived at Ally Pally and had fun setting up the stand with Helen Tovey of Family Tree Magazine and Fergus @oldscotbooks. Am now dead on my feet! See you all soon at #FamilyTreeLive! #AncestryHour

There has been a lot of 'chit chat' in the press and social media lately about the downsides of #DNA testing. As I have encountered a case relatively recently where information may have been upsetting for the families involved I asked the lady I helped if she would like to share her story with others. She kindly agreed - therefore this month's post is written by Margaret Ross. I hope you find her article both enjoyable and informative. #familyhistory #genealogy #AncestryHour

This months blog looks at the correct #familyhistory of the #Bolam family. Predominantly tenant farms, they collectively farmed in #Northumberland on an extraordinary scale despite the economic depression in the post Napoleonic period of the early 19th century. #AncestryHour

The Blog this month looks at the #Carnaby family of Todburn in #Northumberland. It reveals the missing generation which has left researchers of their #familyhistory scratching their heads for over a century and goes to prove the history books don't always get it right. #AncestryHour. https://www.bordersancestry.co.uk/…/car nabys-of-todburn-the…
If you believe you may be related and would like to become involved then please do get in touch. Those who have had their #DNA tested or are willing to do so are particularly welcomed!

Wow has this month flown by - it's nearly the end of January already! This month I have taken a look at the #history of the #Egerton family of London and its connections to the London to Brighton, London to Maidstone Coaches, the artist families of #Hine & #Woledge, and to the #ArtsandCrafts and #Suffragette movement of the late 19th century. I have corrected some of the mistakes widely recorded in online trees, and given some hints and tips on how they could have been avoided. #Familyhistory #Genealogy #AncestryHour. https://www.bordersancestry.co.uk/…/lon don-calling-cordwain…

A Very Happy New Year to all my readers! This month's blog (and the last of 2018), looks at 'memory' from information contained in the diary of a #Northumbrian famer near #Morpeth in the mid-19th century. The bitterness surrounding an inheritance and how it may have contributed to creating a legacy that endures today. #Brewis #Carnaby #Hollon #familyhistory & #genealogy. #AncestryHour

If procrastination was an olympic sport I would be a gold medallist every time! This month's blog about a gentleman from #Berwick upon Tweed is latest distraction that was just too interesting to resist! #Fleming #FamilyHistory #AncestryHour #RobertOwen https://www.bordersancestry.co.uk/…/geo rge-alexander-flemin…

September Blog Post. Again it was a #DNA match that sparked the investigation into my #Watson family of #Crawfordjohn and #Lamington who feature in this months post. This lot have had me scratching my head for years. Not only does one family member manage to sire a family without ever being at home, but his father appears to have come back from the dead! Lots of #familyhistory to get stuck into & needless to say the research is far from finished, so if you think you may be connected do get in touch. #AncestryHour

'Mackem Bullets' - Having recently confirmed #DNA matches to my Bulmer and Greig ancestors of Monkwearmouth at the turn of the 19th century, I have done a bit more digging into their #familyhistory. The will of an enigmatic spinster in 1852 illustrated some interesting connections with very hot tempers! #AncestryHour

A fantastic if somewhat gruesome new resource for Scottish deaths and burials (and what happened in between) from 1832.

This month a glimpse into the 'world' I have been inhabiting for the past few months. Financial accounts far from being dry and boring, can add real colour and depth to our #family and #localhistory research. The examples used in the post have been drawn from the Chamberlains Accounts of #Newcastle upon Tyne between 1508 -1511 and include some wonderful snippets of social history and life on the Tyne in the early 16th century. #AncestryHour
