About Butterfly Conservation Scotland

Butterfly Conservation Scotland Description

Butterflies and moths are a beautiful and intrinsic part of our natural heritage and a joy to behold.

Britain is losing its butterflies – there are 58 species of butterfly in the UK (35 species in Scotland) and over 2, 500 types of moth (about 900 species in Scotland)

but their survival is being threatened. Three quarters of butterfly species are in decline. Four of our butterflies and over 60 moths became extinct last century.

Butterfly Conservation Scotland takes action to stop these declines and ensure these beautiful insects are around for future generations to enjoy. Thankfully our efforts are paying off with some of our rarest species recovering after decades of decline.

We provide management advice on conserving and restoring important habitats in our countryside, towns and cities. We carry out surveys, monitoring and research, manage nature reserves (we have 3 in Scotland) and promote wildlife friendly gardening. With your support we can help struggling butterflies and moths recover and thrive.

Our work depends on the efforts of hundreds of volunteers across Scotland who help in many ways including surveying for species, organising events, running talks and workshops as well as monitoring butterfly and moth populations.
