An incredible fortnight of golf in Scotland is continuing this month. Following the Scottish Open taking place at Gullane in East Lothian last week, The Open at Carnoustie tees off from 19th-22nd July.
The Open was first held in Carnoustie in 1931 and was won by the extraordinary Tommy Armour, known as “the Silver Scot”. An accomplished amateur player, Armour had been a distinguished soldier during WW1 while still in his early 20s. However, he lost his sight and required sign...ificant surgery on his head and left arm following a mustard gas attack.
The sight in his right eye gradually returned, as did his love of golf. By 1924 he had moved to the USA and turned professional, winning the US Open in 1927. He enjoyed a triumphant return home to Scotland in 1931, winning The Open at Carnoustie, which he described as “my favourite course in my young days.”

Travelled Euston to Fort William 17/11/17. Staff very friendly. My son slept like a log. I didnt. Light sleepers should not expect a full nights sleep but it is so much more comfortable than a seat, and avoids a wasted full day of travel. Rising to the Lochs passing the private berth window is priceless, and the cooked Scottish breakfast taken at a reserved seat in the lounge car, as the train weaves between snow capped mountains and crosses the dramatic Rannoch moor, really is pleasant. The view of a stag disdainfully looking down from the hill side as the train passed his kingdom was a fabulous glimpse into anothers world. Arrival into Fort William on time some 12 and a half hours after leaving London. Highly recommended... whether you actually sleep or not. Where else can you travel on a proper train with 16 coaches!

User

The staff were really helpful and friendly, there weren't many people who had booked the sleeper coaches so everyone in the seated coach got upgraded to a sleeper coach, there was free orange juice and biscuits in the morning and they had a clean towel, eye mask and magazine waiting for me on the bed, there are USB ports, each little sleeping area has it's own temperature controls, the beds were really comfy and we were allowed to lie in a little bit once we'd reached our destination. Honestly couldn't have asked for much more, free WiFi would have made it even better but I've honestly no complaints.

User

Thank you very much to the hostess on the overnight sleeper Euston to Glasgow last night who when I booked on with my 5 year old grandson chatted to him and told me exactly how far along the platform the carriage was, she then had to come to my assistance when the lady who had occupied my seat let me walk back along a long platform with a 5 year old to make sure that she was in the correct seat and that I was in the wrong even when the kind hostess tried to explain that it was her in the wrong not me she was still adamant - well al I can say is thank you Mrs due to you being adamant I had the wrong seat you managed to get both me and my grandson a cabin!!!! Sorry I did not manage to get the hostess name but she was excellent kept her cool and made our journey so much better. Once again thank you very much love Shay and his nanny

I have loved travelling on the sleeper in the past couple of years - both Inverness-London and Edinburgh-London - but I am very disappointed by the decision to ban sharing - always a gamble, course - but I have travelled by train across Asia, Europe, and China sharing with strangers and it works! I think is a very bad decision and typically British - of course, it’s aimed at making more money, I guess, in some way,

User

Great service both onboard and at the lounge in Inverness. The train left London-Euston punctually and arrived on time in Inverness despite the bad weather conditions on the way. The train is definitely due for an upgrade, but it's still comfortable enough for us to relax in (we travelled 1st class cos we wanted more space). Can't wait to try out the new trains when they are in service. And the lounge in Inverness, small but cosy. Great place to relax after arriving. Thanks Davie for looking after us.

User

As a family with two children in tow, we loved the experience!

The staff were warm and friendly. An extra special mention must go to Stephen who pretty much looked after us from the moment we boarded through to our arrival at our destination- you are a credit to Caledonian Sleeper!

A star knocked off as the trains could have been a wee bit cleaner- they certainly need to be decommissioned and retired to make way for new cleaner modern trains. However, the experience and service were great! Yes, you may not get the best night’s sleep but you would have to be pretty naive to expect that!

Enjoy the experience for what it is- the novelty of waking up to a gorgeous new city hundreds of miles away! We definitely hope to repeat the whole experience and await the new trains to come into service with anticipation!

User

On board staff very friendly but tried to use the Lounge in Inverness for me and my bike (bike all loaded up for John O’Groats to Lands End). However very unaccommodating. Nowhere to keep bike. Wouldn’t let me take it in despite being the only person there! Apparently if they let me take it in, then others might want to, too. But I couldn’t see ANY OTHERS!

User

If you can stump first class then go for it. I shared a cabin and although my roomie was nice enough I just needed my own space when awake. Few drinks in the evening and some early morning work in the breakfast lounge sorted that out. Ticked off my list though.

User

Great experience but unless you book 1st class you cannot get any tea/coffee or any form of refreshments on board at all! We wanted 1st class but wanted to be together then when we got on the train we discovered that they have adjoining doors so we could have done that but that wasn't made clear at the time of booking. So make sure you take water and snacks with you. There should be a buffet car.

Last night I was coming back with my 4 years old daughter from London to Arbroath by train we were traveling 10 hours I was in big shock after what happened. Ok, I love the sleeper. But last weekend I travelled south on Thursday night on my normal advance ticket for £80 for a single berth in a potentially shared cabin (I didn't have a cabin mate) and received my normal free cup of tea with my morning wake up call. So far so good. Roll forward to my Sunday eve return. So I'd for some unannounced reason had to pay a whopping £140 for this advance ticket, that's an increase of £60 or 75%. I think it's because I wasn't allowed to book a berth in a shared cabin as a single traveller. I've been booking single berths in shared cabins since 1995; no problems ever. Anyway, I was sure that for the extra £60 I'd have a fancier cabin with extra free accessories. No such luck; exactly the same type of cabin, still with 2 berths in it, but again only me in residence. And then they wanted me to pay an extra £2.50 for a cup of tea in the morning. So, yes, that's right, a total of an extra £62.50 for exactly the same product that I'd used on Thursday night. How is this new policy good customer service or good value for money? I'm baffled, disappointed and concerned in equal measure. PS I didn't pay for the cup of tea and so didn't get a wake up call :(

Being a big fan of trains & for years wanting to the try the Caledonian Sleeper I didn’t think it would have disappointed so much. We sat in Single seats (not a cabin) so we knew it wouldn’t be fancy but what we found was:

- No leg room at all. Sitting right up against the guy opposite.

- Chairs do not recline back more than an inch, had to sleep sitting upright. Also, as a couple, the arm rests don’t go all the way up so you can’t make it a double seat.

- Noisy, especially in our carriage, the noise from under the train was constant.

- Train turns around during the journey, a massive frustration when you’ve specifcally chosen a direction of travel due to my parents travel sickness.

- No communication from train staff. At all. Absolute silence for 9+ hours. So when the train stops in the middle of nowhere making strange noises, all the passengers are worried and confused! Asked an assistant if we could swap and was told “too late now” very rudely.

- No food offered at all. If there was, no tray to eat it on my seat.

- Interior decor was look dated in the 1980s.

Overall, unless you’re sitting in first class, you get treated like scum. Not with paying £120 for a one way ticket. Avoid.

Will be writing a letter of complaint & will update my review based on the reply.

User

£405 for a return journey on creaking carriages in "first class" cabins that barely qualify as basic and have long since seen better days...to add insult to injury, there was rubbish under my bunk and hair on the bedsheets. Also, one of the onboard toilets was in a disgusting state and wouldn't flush...does anybody bother to check them? A disappointment to say the least and quite frankly, extremely poor value for money. Avoid.

User

Travelled from Inverness to Euston on 21/3/18

At first glance very happy.

Read literature about how the Caledonian Sleeper aims to ensure a good sleep.

Went to check bed and found that mattress was so worn that the fitted sheet had nothing to hold on to

As soon as you touched it the sheet came off. Revealing a frayed mattress cover and bare foam . When mentioned to a guard was told to turn mattress over

So a rubbish experience for First Class and £190 !!

Offered national rail vouchers and after a number of emails an apology

Rubbish customer service

User

This service has really gone downhill recently. Staffing levels are a fraction of what they used to be. On our last trip just before Christmas my partner had a severe reaction to the bedding and when we had a closer look we could see that the mattress covers were disintegrating which cannot be hygienic. The steward confirmed that we weren't the only people to have had a reaction to the bedding but Caledonian offered us a measly £50 of rail vouchers as compensation for what had been a miserable night.

User

Railcard users beware, Caledonian sleeper have decided not to honour senior and other discount cards when you book their twin berth cabins. They claim it is because of the new trains - actually it's just a convenient revision to their booking rules to extract more money from their passengers. Disgraceful!

User

My daughter and I arrived in Inverness this morning totally exhausted due to strange allergic reaction to bed clothes! Both of us have had prickly stabbing pain all night! And it wasn't just us, other travellers experienced the same pain! Have been travelling this route for years and do believe it's gone downhill since the new service provider took over! Would suggest @caledoniansleeper you go back to the cotton sheets!!!!

User

Is there no end to your price rises? It's now cheaper (and cleaner) to fly to Aberdeen and spend the night in a hotel. Your berth supplements have almost doubled in the last couple of years and now they've just gone up again in the last few weeks from £80 to £100.....good luck attracting more business!

User

I never use the sleeper but I am regularly delayed on the Montrose platform due to it braking down delaying all trains behind it. Today it is 7.32 and I am sitting on the 7.04 in Montrose because the sleeper can’t release its braking system at Laurencekirk! I pity all the poor soles that have travelled a long distance and aren’t going anywhere. In the mean time I am going to be late for work AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
